FLIR PC-NVR is software bundled with the FLIR Cloud Client software download. It is a completely separate software, and one does not require the other to function.

FLIR PC-NVR turns the computer into an NVR and will use your hard disk drive (HDD) on your PC to store recorded video.

IMPORTANT: If you install PC-NVR and want to remove it afterwards, you must uninstall FLIR Cloud Client software entirely and re-install it with the PC-NVR option not selected. Uninstalling FLIR Cloud Client will require the administrator password. If you do not have this password, you must contact technical support for assistance in recovering your password.

The following instructions require you to access your system using the FLIR Cloud Client software and a PC.

REMINDER: FLIR PC-NVR can be installed while installing FLIR Cloud Client. However, if it is not initially installed, FLIR Cloud will need to be uninstalled and re-installed to install FLIR PC-NVR at a later date.

Prerequisites:

• Ensure FLIR Cloud Client software and FLIR PC-NVR are downloaded on your PC.

• Record the device ID and IP address of the camera or DVR / NVR system you want to add to PC-NVR.

◦ Accessing system information on your ECO Series DVR

◦ Accessing system information on your LHV / LNR Series DVR / NVR

• Ensure your PC is connected to the same network as your DVR / NVR system.

• Manually add your camera or DVR / NVR system to FLIR Cloud Client software

To add a channel from the DVR / NVR in FLIR PC-NVR:

1.Launch FLIR Cloud Client software on your computer, then click PC-NVR.

2.Click the Plus icon () to open the Add Channel window.

3.Enter the device ID or IP address of the system you want to add.

4.Select the channel you want to add using the checkbox, then click Import.

Once you have added the channel, you can configure your hard disk drive (HDD) settings for your PC.

To configure your HDD settings:

• Click PC-NVR > Disk Management, then configure the following:

◦ When disk is full: Select Stop Recording or Overwrite.

CAUTION: Overwrite will save recorded video over the oldest saved files when your hard drive is full.

◦ Allocate: Enter hard drive space you would like FLIR PC-NVR to use.

TIP: FLIR PC-NVR is compatible with an external USB HDD.

FLIR Cloud PC-NVR installation and setup

You can set a recording schedule for each connected camera in FLIR PC-NVR.

To set a recording schedule for a camera:

1.Click Record Plan.

2.Select the channel you want to set a recording schedule for.

3.Select Continuous, Motion, or Alarm, then click and drag in the timeline of each day to customize the recording schedule.

◦ Continuous: Your camera will record continuously.

◦ Motion: Your camera will record when it detects motion.

◦ Alarm: Your camera will alert you when it detects motion.

TIP: Setting a recording schedule in FLIR PC-NVR does not affect the recording schedule set on your DVR / NVR system.

Your PC-NVR will behave as a virtual NVR system and save your recorded video to your PC. FLIR PC-NVR shows in the Device list and behaves like any other DVR / NVR system in the FLIR Cloud Client software.

1.Adding your DVR / NVR using IP address

Your LHV / LNR Series DVR / NVR system can be manually added to the FLIR Cloud Client software by entering the system IP address.

Prerequisites:

• Download and install the FLIR Cloud Client software

• Ensure you have the IP address of your LHV / LNR Series DVR / NVR system.

• The following instructions require you to access your system using the FLIR Cloud Client software and a PC / Mac. The instructions below are shown using a Windows 10 operating system.

To manually add the LHV / LNR Series DVR / NVR using an IP address:

1.Launch FLIR Cloud Client software on your computer to open the Login window.

2.Enter your login information. Refer to your user manual for your default Username and Password.

3.Click Login to open the Home window.

4.Click the Devices icon () to open the Devices tab.

5.Click Manual Add on the bottom-left corner to open the Manual Add window.

6.In the Manual Add window, enter the following information:

◦ Device Name: Enter the Device Name of your choice to identify the DVR / NVR.

◦ IP/Domain Name: Ensure the IP/Domain checkbox is checked to enable connection using the IP address. Enter the IP address of the DVR / NVR.

◦ Client Port: Enter the Client Port value (default: 35000).

◦ User Name: Enter the DVR / NVR User Name.

◦ Password: Enter the DVR / NVR Password.

7.Click Add to connect the DVR / NVR. The connection may take a few minutes.

1.Adding your DVR / NVR using Device ID

Your DVR / NVR can be manually added to the FLIR Cloud Client software by entering the device ID. FLIR Cloud Client software is available for download on PC / Mac. Click here for more information on locating software downloads.

• The following instructions require you to access your system using the FLIR Cloud Client software and a PC / Mac. The instructions below are shown using a Windows 10 operating system.

To manually add the DVR / NVR using a device ID:

1.Launch FLIR Cloud Client software on your computer.

2.Enter your login information. Refer to your user manual for your default Username and Password if needed.

3.Click Login to open the Home window.

4.Click the Devices icon () to open the Devices tab.

5.Click Manual Add on the bottom-left corner to open the Manual Add window.

6.In the Manual Add window, enter the following:

◦ Device Name: Enter the Device Name of your choice to identify the DVR / NVR.

◦ Device ID: Enter the device ID or scan the QR code located on the top of the DVR / NVR.

◦ Client Port: Enter the Client Port value (default: 35000).

◦ User Name: Enter the DVR / NVR User Name. Refer to your user manual for your default Username if needed.

◦ Password: Enter the DVR / NVR Password. Refer to your user manual for your default Password if needed.

7.Click Add to connect your DVR / NVR. The connection may take a few minutes.

8.Click Home, and then double-click Default Group to load your connected cameras.

If you are not able to connect to your DVR / NVR using the device ID on the same network, you may be experiencing a NAT Loopback issue. Routers recognize and connect to DVR / NVR via IP address. Installation:

Warning: Install in an area that can support 3× total weight of the camera and junction box.

1.Use the Allen key to loosen the screws and open the junction box.

2.Remove the screws with the Allen key to detach the back bracket.

3.Optional Customization: Install a converter, air circuit breaker, standard socket, surge protectors, and a power adapter.

Note: The products mentioned and shown above are not included.

4.Optional Customization: Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove any unused trays inside the junction box.

5.Drill holes in the wall and install the back bracket with expansion bolts.

6.Lower the junction box onto the back bracket.

7.Tighten the screws using the Allen key.

8.Remove the silicone plug and open it along the slit.

9.Insert the cable into the plug and reinstall the plug into the junction box.

10.Use the appropriate screws and washers to attach the PTZ camera to the front of the junction box.

11.Weatherproof the Wiring: Connect the necessary cables, pass them and the camera cables through the bottom holes, and secure them with cable glands.

12.Close the junction box and tighten all four screws.

Junction Box for PTZ Cameras: Troubleshooting Guide

I cannot fit my camera’s cable through the front of the junction box

1.Remove the silicon plug, and open it at the slit.

My PTZ Camera has external accessories

You can install external accessories inside the junction box in the metal trays.

I want more room for cables in my junction box

I need to organize my cables

The included cable ties are for cable organization inside of the junction box. Manually coil your cables until the junction box outputs the desired length of wire, and then use the cable ties to keep the coil together.

Location Selection:

• Install the camera at a height that provides a broad and unobstructed view of the area you want to monitor. For most PTZ cameras, a height between 8 to 15 feet is ideal.

• Ensure the location and angle allows the camera to cover all necessary areas without any blind spots.

• Choose a location that is accessible for maintenance and adjustments but secure enough to prevent tampering.

• Ensure proximity to a power source if the camera is not PoE.

Mounting Surface:

• Determine whether the camera will be mounted on a wall or ceiling. Junction boxes are available for both types of mounts.

• Ensure the mounting surface is sturdy and capable of supporting the weight of the camera and junction box. Concrete, brick, or solid wood are ideal.

Other recommendations:

• Place the camera close to your Wi-Fi router as possible.

• Reduce the number of obstructive materials between the camera and the router or access point.

A junction box attatches to a device and secures its cables in a contained space. It allows for improved safety, organization, and look for a device and it’s cables. This PTZ camera junction box allows you to keep your PTZ camera’s cables, and applicable added accessories safe and secure from weather and tampering.

Up to 5 cables can enter or exit the junction box and plu in externally. Up to 3 cables can be weatherproofed with a cable gland.

How do I install my E851AD camera with this product?

The E851AD camera equips a cable that exits from the bottom edge of the device, while other models equip cables that exit from the middle of the bottom side. Because of this, extra care must be taken to attach the outdoor junction box to the E851AD camera. Please follow the following steps for proper installation of your camera and outdoor junction box.

1.Install the bottom half of junction box to your desired location.

2.Remove the dome camera cover from the E851AD camera using the provided Allen key from the camera package.

Note: Do not remove the dome cover in humid or dusty environments and always wash your hands before handling your camera.

3.Carefully bend the E851AD camera cable to fit into the upper portion of the outdoor junction box. The outdoor junction box has been indented to allow for compatibilty with the E851AD camera. Feed the camera cable through the hole in the middle of the indentation.

4.Use the provided screws and Allen key from the junction box package, to attach the base of the E851AD camera to the outdoor junction box.

5.Use the provided Allen key and screws from the camera package, to re-attach the dome camera cover to the E851AD camera base.

6.Bring the top half of the outdoor junction box to the bottom half, and close it using the provided screws and Allen key from the junction box package.

Enjoy using your new E851AD camera, with your new outdoor junction box.

Where can I install the outdoor junction box?

The outdoor junction box can be installed at any location that can support the entire weight of the outdoor junction box and the attached camera (up to 7.8 lbs / 3.54 kg). However the following criteria are recommended for best performance:

• Place your camera in a wide, open space, and avoid placing it near any obstructions.

• Place your camera at the central point of the area you wish to monitor.

• Point your camera where there is the least amount of obstructions (i.e. tree branches).

• Install your camera in a location that is difficult for thieves and vandals to reach.

• Secure cabling so that it is not exposed or easily cut.

Other recommendations:

• Place the camera close to your Wi-Fi router as possible.

Upgrade your DVR Security System

If you have a camera security system that is wired for coaxial and you cannot run Ethernet, you can connect our Coaxial to Ethernet Converter Kit. Installation

1.Connect a solid wire Cat5e or Cat6 network cable to your PoE Switch/NVR’s “PoE Port” and to your receiver’s “PoE IN” port.

2.Connect the coaxial BNC cable to the “Long Reach” ports on both your receiver and transmitter.

3.Connect a solid wire Cat5e or Cat6 network cable to your IP Camera’s Ethernet connector and to your transmitter’s “PoE OUT” port.

4K IP Wired Dome Security Camera with Smart Deterrence: Installation

This article provides instructions on how to install and connect 4K Smart Deterrence IP Dome Camera with Smart Motion Detection Plus (E893DD Series) to the NVR.

Before Installing

• Test your camera prior to selecting a permanent mounting location by temporarily connecting the camera and cable to your NVR.

• Decide whether to run the cables through the wall/ceiling (drilling required) or along the wall/ceiling. If you run the cables along the wall/ceiling, you must run the cable through the cable notch located on the camera base (see figure below). This will keep the camera base flush to the surface when mounted.

Installing 4K Smart Deterrence IP Dome Camera

1.Use the included mounting template to mark holes for the screws and camera cable.

2.Drill holes for the screws and camera cable. Insert the optional anchors if installing in drywall.

3.Feed the camera cable through the camera base. If you are running cables along a wall/ceiling, make sure to pass the cable through the cable notch.

4.Connect cables as shown in “Connecting the camera”, pages 10-11.

5.Use a Philips screwdriver and the screws to attach the camera base to the mounting surface.

6.Angle the dome camera and cover as shown in the figure below.

7.Use the included Allen key to tighten the dome camera firmly onto the camera base.

8.Remove the vinyl film from the camera lens once your installation is complete.

Connecting 4K Smart Deterrence IP Dome Camera

Connect the cameras and cables to your NVR using one of the following two setup methods.

1. Connect cameras directly to the NVR (recommended)

Connect the Ethernet cable to the camera and then connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the NVR’s PoE ports. The camera may take a minute to power on after being connected.

Note: A 12V DC power adapter (model#: ACCPWR12V1, not included) is only required if connecting the camera’s Ethernet cable to a router or switch that does not support PoE.

Notes:

• The smart deterrence camera is only compatible with select NVRs. For a list of compatible NVRs, visit lorextechnology.com/compatibility.

• You must connect the camera to a supporting H.265 NVR to take advantage of H.265 compression. For instructions on enabling H.265 compression, visit How do I enable H.265 compression?

2. Connect cameras to a PoE switch or router on your network (not included)

Connect the Ethernet cable to the camera and then connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to a router or switch on your network. See your NVR manual for details on connecting the camera to your NVR using a router or switch.

Using the RJ45 cable gland (optional)

The pre-attached RJ45 cable gland covers both the camera’s Ethernet connector and the RJ45 plug to provide weather-resistance and protection from dust, dirt and other environmental contaminants.

To use the RJ45 cable gland, twist the RJ45 cable gland barrel securely onto the camera’s Ethernet connector.

Tip: The RJ45 cable gland is weather-resistant. Seal the cap with silicone and/or electrical tape for additional sealing if it will be exposed to precipitation regularly.

Cable extension options

You can extend the Ethernet cable run for your camera up to 300ft (91m). To extend the cable run beyond 300ft (91m), a switch will be required (sold separately). Use an RJ45 coupler or a network switch (not included) to connect male ends of Ethernet cables together. We recommend using UL CMR approved cables available at lorex.com.

4K IP Wired Dome Security Camera with Smart Deterrence: Getting Started

This article provides instructions on how to setup the 4K Smart Deterrence IP Dome Camera with Smart Motion Detection Plus (E893DD Series).

Important Installation Guidelines

The optimal installation location, including the height and angle of your camera, will depend on the type of detection settings that you want to enable. Since the optimal angle for person and vehicle detection is different from the optimal angle for face detection, you will need to select one approach.

Note: You cannot enable both face detection and person and vehicle detection at the same time.

Based on your detection preference choose between:

1. Optimizing person and vehicle detection accuracy

• Choose a location where objects of interest will be no further than 50ft (15m) from the camera.

• Install the camera between 8-16ft (2.5-5m) off the ground.

• Angle the camera between 30-60° down from the level position.

• Optimal accuracy for objects of interest appear in the bottom 2/3 of the camera image.

• Point the camera where there is the least amount of obstructions (i.e. tree branches).

Accuracy of person and vehicle detection

Accuracy will be influenced by multiple factors, such as the object’s distance from the camera, the size of the object, and the height and angle of the camera. Night vision will also impact the accuracy of detection.

2. Optimizing face and mask detection accuracy

• Install in a bright area and avoid facing direct sunlight with strong backlights and dark shadows.

• Choose a location where objects of interest will be no further than 15ft (4.5m) from the camera.

• Position the camera 10ft (3m) off the ground to detect the full proportion of a face.

• Angle the camera around 15° down from the level position.

• Point the camera directly where objects of interest will be facing.

Note: Facial recording without consent is illegal in certain jurisdictions. Lorex Technology does not assume liability for any use of its product that fails to conform with local laws.

High accuracy Vs. low accuracy face detection

Accuracy will be influenced by lighting conditions and the distance/angle of a person’s face to the camera.

• To distinguish facial features, the camera must be positioned head on with a clear view of a person’s face. Obscured and partially/fully covered faces will not be accurately captured.

• To improve the range of face detection in low light conditions, color night vision will switch to black & white. If you cannot meet these requirements for installation, it may be best to follow the guidelines for person and vehicle detection instead.

Mask detection

With face detection enabled, you can set the alarm type to detect if a person is not wearing a mask. A person not wearing a mask or improperly wearing a mask will be captured in the face preview sidebar and a notification will be sent through the Lorex App.

• Enable Mask Detect and Auto-response to remind a non-mask wearer to: “Please wear your face mask”.

4K Ultra HD Smart Deterrence IP Camera: Installation Guide

This article provides instructions on how to install and connect 4K Ultra HD Smart Deterrence IP Camera (E893AB Series) to the NVR.

Before Installing

• Test your camera prior to selecting a permanent mounting location by temporarily connecting the camera and cable to your NVR.

Installing 4K Ultra HD Smart Deterrence IP Camera

1.Use the included mounting template to mark holes for the screws.

2.Use a 3/16” drill bit to drill holes for the mounting screws. Insert the included drywall anchors if you are installing the camera in drywall.

4.Feed the cable through the mounting surface or cable notch and mount the camera stand to the surface using the included screws.

5.Use a Philips screwdriver to loosen the adjustment screw and adjust the camera position as needed.

6.Tighten the adjustment screw to secure the position.

7.Remove the vinyl film from the camera lens when your installation is complete.

Connecting 4K Ultra HD Smart Deterrence IP Camera

Connect the cameras and cables to your NVR using one of the following two setup methods.

1. Connect cameras directly to the NVR (recommended).

Connect the Ethernet cable to the camera and then connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the NVR’s PoE ports. The camera may take a minute to power on after being connected.

Note: A 12V DC power adapter (model#: ACCPWR12V1, not included) is only required if connecting the camera’s Ethernet cable to a router or switch that does not support PoE.

The pre-attached RJ45 cable gland covers both the camera’s Ethernet connector and the RJ45 plug to provide weather-resistance and protection from dust, dirt and other environmental contaminants.

To use the RJ45 cable gland, twist the RJ45 cable gland barrel securely onto the camera’s Ethernet connector.

Tip: The RJ45 cable gland is weather-resistant. Seal the cap with silicone and/or electrical tape for additional sealing if it will be exposed to precipitation regularly.

NVR is short for Network Video Recorder, a device which acts as a hub for an IP-based security camera system. It is a storage and review point for your CCTV which means you don’t need to sign up to remote service to store your video.

That means, of course, it’ll need cameras, typically connected by power-over-ethernet (PoE) cables (see our guide to the best PoE cameras), and a storage medium like a hard drive.

Retailers often package the same NVR in several different bundles, mixing up the types and numbers of cameras and hard drives, or simply leaving this all to you. There are real bargains to be had with some of these all-in-one kits, and the only real downside is some spectacularly confusing product names.

An NVR, incidentally, is not quite the same thing as a DVR (or Digital Video Recorder), which appeared in the late 90s. They look similar and store video too, but a DVR is built to accept and digitally compress analogue or digital video via coax sockets; an NVR expects a digital input.

The advantage of an NVR-based security system is that, because the video is being compressed by the cameras, local processing power is available for AI functions like detecting movement. This, in turn, means you don’t need to dig into your wallet for a subscription service; both storage and AI analysis are provided by a device you own rather than a service you lease.

Given that subscription services usually only store the clips their AI identifies as significant, having your own NVR may give you the power to review every moment yourself rather than being dependent on an algorithm to parse the events your camera sees. All the advantages of networking like remote access and – of course – the ability to work with all IP cameras, wired or wireless, remain.

We look at some of the key features in detail at the end, but something else to remember if you’re in the USA is the China trade war; major security player HikVision have already fallen victim to US internal bans on new products and may end up on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list.

Key features to look out for are remote access, PoE (Power over Ethernet), which can simplify wiring, hard drive capacity (indeed if any drives are included at all), the resolution limit, the number of channels or cameras it can handle, and if there are any means of backup. Remember that a 4K camera uses more data throughput than a 1080P one, so an NVR can handle fewer of them – this is where the compression method (e.g. H.264 or H.265) can make a big difference.

2: Amcrest 5 Series NV5232E-16P

Best DVR for multi-brand compatibility

While not everyone will need the 320Mbps throughput, if you’re looking for a powerful NVR which affords some flexibility when it comes to choosing your cameras (and don’t mind paying for that) then the Amcrest 5 Series seems to have that in the bag. Eight of the sixteen Ethernet sockets are PoE, likely enough for most customers though it seems a shame they weren’t all enabled.

We certainly can’t complain about the level of effort which seems to have gone into usability in what is not always the most user-friendly product category; a great example is the QR codes to bring up quick remote viewing via the Amcrest View app.

The device is certainly not the cheapest on this list, given the list price doesn’t’ include a hard drive and you’ll need at least one – likely two unless you opt for the motion detection mode. It does, however, offer some of the features of subscription services via the app and web features, as well as the advantages of a hardwired device; not to be sniffed at.

3: Swann AllSecure650

Best NVR for uninterrupted security

Swann has always built innovative systems, and this is no exception. Adopting an elegant upright design, the NVR PowerHub is the basis of several new Swann packs including the AllSecure650. We like this system not only because of the elegant design, but because it offers so many options in a small package. It also, brilliantly, turns the main annoyance of battery camera systems to its advantage; an extra battery is included (total of 3 for a 2 camera bundle).

The extra battery lives in the hub, where it not only charges but offers backup power backup in case of an outage. When you need to swap a camera battery you have a spare, ready to go, so you can swap it with one – rather than two – trips up the ladder to the camera.

It does not, however, ditch all the functionality of a traditional NVR as it attempts to blend into the home or small business. While you can control nearly everything via the app, as well as enjoy remote access, there is also a mouse socket and HDMI port for use with a monitor. The supplied 1TB storage will also manage 2 years of clips by Swann’s reckoning, after which you can opt for Dropbox or USB transfer.

Synology offer multi-drive RAID storage systems – many which can take on a little monitoring on the side – and devices like this built with it front and center. There is the power to drive AI on up to 16 streams of video including separating people from animals, intrusion detection and even license place recognition. Businesses can even use the AI system to detect whether face mask rules are being complied with. This AI also helps distinguish threats in poor lighting thanks to the GPU power. Recording can be backed up across drives or both can form a single volume

As well as HDMI connection for a monitor, the device can be reached remotely via iOS and Android apps and on virtually any computer via a browser interface. The USB 3.2 ports (front and back) offer keyboard and mouse connection.

This is a great choice for smaller installs, but bigger businesses might need something like the 4-drive FVA3221.

Best DVR for reviewing video history

Despite having only one SATA bay, the Reolink system makes a lot of room for storage by adding an eSATA socket at the back. The system is also typically bundled with its preferred Reolink 4K cameras which provide stand-out sharp footage which is easy to review thanks to the fresh modern interface. Reolink also offer a great variety of cameras and a doorbell.

Built-in operating systems can be a tad clunky, but connect the supplied mouse to the NVR and the Reolink interface, whether on 4K TV or VGA screen, is a bit clearer. The 24/7 recording is accompanied by a timeline which highlights events (people or vehicles) and can be filtered as you browse. While it doesn’t sound a lot, in practice most CCTV reviewing is for these things.

When connected to your local network via the LAN socket, assuming an internet connection, the system can use the same alert tech to send specific activity alerts to your devices.

Best NVR for affordable plug-and-play

Clearly built for practicality, the Annke H800 makes connecting a USB drive easy without re-positioning by adding an extra USB socket at the front as well as the rear one for the mouse.

The in-built OS isn’t beautiful, but actually very smart; you can choose to disable motion detection by zone on each camera view and, even as you refine the detection, you see a handy live view of where the algorithm is spotting action. Other handy features include quotas for individual cameras to prioritize some recordings drive vapacity.

The system includes event-driven or “Smart” timeline review of recorded video, the latter allowing you to search video for movement within areas you specify – a handy tool for finding if someone went into a specific corner of the shot after the fact.

Phone integration for Android or iOS also brings notifications though only one user account can be connected.

Best DVR for AI features

What shines out with the Swann system is the more advanced facial recognition tools which put person/vehicle recognition in the shade. Yes, generalized person or vehicle alerts are still very useful, but Swann allows the known faces can be named. That makes specific alerts possible if, say, one of the kids gets near the treats. That is the kind of benefit consumer smart cameras offer, built on with integrations with Alexa and Google Assistant, but without the cost of a subscription.

A third USB socket covers mouse, backup drive and downloading to a USB stick
without needing to unplug anything – usability plus.

On the down-side, pet detection does require a cloud subscription (perhaps that just feels a worrying threshold to cross). In reality the fact Swann offer a cloud option – and secure backup using it – will be a handy option for some, even if it does bring with it a monthly fee. Swann’s Enforcer Kit system also has a number of 4K CCTV cameras with red and blue flashing LEDs and sirens built in which can be acquired in a bundle with the NVR for an effective deterrent system.

Best NVR for smart home integrations

This elegant-looking NVR actually has the same sockets as most other 4K 8-channel systems from the back, but is chic enough to sit comfortably under a living room TV. There the central panic button, which triggers all lights & sirens built into connected cameras, could end a home invasion.

The main Lorex NVR software also allows you to set up effective deterrence rules using person and vehicle detection and features area search for easier review.

There is a similar level of design polish in the remote access app save for one thing; if you do connect wireless and wired cameras you’ll need to tidy up the alerts yourself to avoid duplicates.

We also appreciated that the Apple TV wasn’t forgotten; and smart home fans will love the ability to add sensors (like gate or door opening) as well as cameras via a Lorex Sensor Hub.

A RAID system with security-friendly extras

As well as dedicated NVRs, Synology are synonymous (sorry!) with all sizes of data storage devices. While many entrust their data – especially with limited amounts of it – to the cloud, there are many reasons to have a physical backup system. Hot-swappable drives mean every piece of information can be backed up within the device, and a network connection means it is available via your home network, or remotely.

Since the machine is essentially a small computer, it can run apps on its own OS, from Mail Server to (more relevant here) Synology Surveillance Station. This lets you use some of your overall drive space to store video from your connected security cameras.

10. CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4

For those who want to make security a hobby experience

Make no mistake, this is not the same approach as the other products on this list. This isn’t a ready-made box with all the necessary PoE sockets to connect a series of cameras to but, since an NVR is essentially just a computer in different clothes, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the enthusiast community is continuously refining software to power NVRs.

If you feel motivated to build your own, why not start with a Raspberry Pi 4? Unless you’re only using USB cameras, you’ll also need a PoE Ethernet Switch (like the BV-Tech) and certainly some kind of storage (it’s unlikely the microSD card slot in the Pi will cut it for long, but many folk already have a spare external hard drive lying around). From there it’s simply a matter of choosing an OS and a piece of software; Shinobi is available for free and supports ARM architecture, as does ZoneMinder, so there are two good starting points.

Best NVR for big multi-camera set-ups

If you need a more powerful NVR – with greater camera capacity – than the NV4108E above, then Amcrest have you covered; the 4216E-AI supports up to two 8GB drives inside and has 16 PoE ports for cameras on the back, all capable of 4K resolution. The system is happy with H.265 and H.264 and has a high-speed throughput of 200Mbps, dropping to 80Mbps when the on-board AI functions are active. This sacrifice buys you human and vehicle detection (and search in recordings), offering functionality to compete with the subscription services from Google Nest and Amazon Ring among others. Amcrest’s App is similar in scope. The machine even has microphone sockets for two-way-talk from the NVR.

12. xmartO WNQ28

Wi-Fi NVR which can keep your CCTV separate from home network

If you’d like to install a CCTV system with some of the advantages of your own NVR, but aren’t interested in undertaking the cabling, then the WNQ28 seems a rational choice. It eschews the PoE network switching components in favor of two antenna to create its own wi-fi network which you can connect cameras and viewing devices to. xmartO also include their “G3 Auto WiFi Relay” feature which can use cameras to extend the network.

With or without this, the advantage of this device is that it keeps CCTV cameras on a different frequency from your home’s potentially already heavily taxed wi-fi (an issue many of us are starting to notice as high-speed broadband becomes more common). On the down-side it offers a fairly generic Linux-based OS and doesn’t have high bandwidth, while it definitely prefers xmartO cameras. Nevertheless it definitely helps keep things separate when building your network, so we can see some DIY fans strongly preferring this.

How to choose an NVR system

Selecting an NVR forces you to think about the very heart of your security system, and the choice you make will depend on whether you’re starting from scratch or you already have cameras you need to connect to. In either case, make the right choice and it’ll offer years of use even though you add and swap cameras and hard drives.

• Storage bays:
While you only need one hard drive to store days of video, having multiple ones gives you different RAID setups to maximize storage or create live backups.

• Camera connections:
If the NVR has a built-in network switch then wires can run from it straight to the cameras. Otherwise a separate Ethernet switch will be required.

• PoE:
Look for the connections to provide power to the cameras using the Power Over Ethernet standard, since this minimizes wiring and is a recognized standard.

• Camera compatibility:
Major brand’s cameras are generally cross-compatible if they support the ONVIF standard, but you can’t guarantee AI features are supported by competitor’s software. Just another reason to look for a bundle!

• Operating System:
While the leading brands have developed their own software, there are various Linux based systems out there meaning it’s possible for companies not much more advanced than enthusiasts to develop their own NVR.

• Trade sanctions:
In the USA Lorex, EZVIZ and HikVision have had their products restricted from government purchase. HikVision is similarly restricted in the UK and in both countries, this might only be the beginning. It is a step toward the banning of new products for all customers. The governments cite the firms’ links with Chinese government surveillance and, they say, has human rights violations. Regardless of the evidence, if you’re building a system it might be wise to look for a brand that will still be on the shelves when you want to add to your system.

How to Access Device from Web 2M DVRs

When devices are connected to the network, they can also be accessible from a computer. The first thing you need to make sure of is that the computer you are using and the DVR/NVR are connected to the same network (network is coming from the same router for both devices). You will first need to obtain the IP address of the DVR/NVR from Menu → System → Network → IPv4 address.

After noting the IP address of your device, open Internet Explorer and in the address search bar type in the DVR/NVR IP address. If the NVR and the computer are on the same network then it will pull up the login page of the DVR/NVR. The credentials will be the same as when you log into the local interface of your device.

In the case that you forget the password for you device in which you will not be able to access the web page, and the camera is too high up to reach to find the sticker, you can use 2M Tool to find the serial number. 2M Tool does not automatically show the number; you must force it to show. First, you will need to click on the Settings icon to show the options:

Then another window will open where you can select Serial Number to show.

Once you hit OK, the serial number will then appear.

How to Install Plugin for Internet Explorer

This article features screenshots from our 2MN-8XXX series NVR and our 2MT-4XXX series DVR, but the same principle will apply to any other recorder. This is because each recorder requires a plugin in order to view the cameras on the web page. You will have to manually install the plugin, but it is usually always provided as a link for easy access.

First, you must make sure that you are using Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is the only browser that can support these plugins. It is possible for some devices to be viewed on Google Chrome or even Firefox, but then other functions are very limited so it is highly not recommended to use those browsers. Once Internet Explorer is open, and you navigate to the device’s web page by entering the IP address, there should be a link shown on the page. You can see on the picture below that the link is located on the top of the page.

When you click on the link, a pop-up will appear on the bottom of the page that will let you choose whether to Run the program or Save the program onto your computer. Note: Running the program will not save it. If you wish to save the program, please select Save. Once it has finished downloading, then you can run the program from the file location.

If you choose to Run the program, an error message will appear noting that the publisher couldn’t be verified. This is no issue; the plugin will not cause any harm to your computer. Hit Run, and run the installation. Some installations will require you to close out of Internet Explorer in order to complete the setup.

Once the setup is complete, refresh the page, and another message will pop-up on the bottom that asks you to Allow the add-on to run. Select Allow, and log into the page. Now you should be able to view your cameras on the web page.

How to Set Up 2M Guard

2M Guard is the phone app that we use for our NVR’s to view cameras from our phones offsite.

This app only works for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

Find the Register Code and/or QR Code for your DVR/NVR

on NVR menu: Menu → System → Network → P2P OR Menu → Network → P2P
on web menu: Setup → Network → P2P

2. Two ways to add a device onto the app:

Star4Live
directly on the app

Method 1: Adding Device Through Star4Live

Go to https://www.star4live.com/login
Click on Login if you already have an existing account or Sign Up if you do not

Once you have logged in, click on Add and another window will pop up prompting for a Device Name and Register Code. Once all of the required information has been filled out, hit OK and your device should show up under My Cloud Devices.

Once you have successfully added the device on Star4Live, open the app and log into your account using the same credentials that you created/used on star4live.com
Go to Live View and tap the icon in the upper right corner to select a device
Select the device you would like to view
Start live view

Method 2: Adding Device Directly on the App

When you first download the app it will prompt you to either Sign Up or Login
Tap on Login if you already have an existing account or Sign Up if you do not

Open up the app menu and go to Devices. This section shows all of the devices that have been added onto your account. To add another one, tap on Add at the top of the screen.

You can choose to add the device by scanning the QR code or by manually inputting the Register Code. To move forward with either of these options, you will need to tap on Scan

A screen will appear for you to scan a QR code. If you choose to scan this is where you will do it, but if you choose to manually enter the Register Code, tap on the edit icon on the bottom.

Once all of the correct information has been filled out, hit the Save icon in the upper right corner.
In order to see the cameras, open the app menu and tap on Live View
At first, it will look blank. This is because we need to add the cameras to the windows. Tap on the Add icon in the upper right corner

A list of your devices will appear. Select the one that you want to view and hit Start Live View on the bottom

Now you can view your cameras on the go!

How to Set Up 2M Station

When first running the program, it will prompt you for a username and password which will be admin/123456 by default. It is recommended that you change the password after installation.

Once you are logged in it will show the menu. Click on Device Management to add any devices. On the left side make sure that Encoding Device is selected. It will show at the bottom of the screen any devices that are online as long as the computer is on the same network as the devices.

There are two methods to add an online device. The first method is fairly simple. All you need to do is check the box for the NVR that shows under Online Device and then click Add. The second method to adding an online device is to manually add it. First click on Add next to Managed Device, and it will open another window where you can input the details of your device. It will ask for:

Device Name → can be any name for your device
IP/Domain → local or public IP address of NVR
Port → port number of NVR
Username → username of NVR
Password → password of NVR

After putting in all of the correct information of your device, click on Add and then the device should come online.

Another method to add a device is by using the P2P method which allows for a user to view their cameras offsite from any location. The device will be added as a Cloud Device instead of an Encoding Device.

It will show Login and Register buttons that will link to your Star4Live account which will show the devices you have previously added. After logging in, it will take a minute or two for the devices to show online. At first, it will say Offline (Connecting…), but eventually the status will show Online.

After successfully adding all of your devices, go back to the menu and click on Live View to view your cameras. A list of online devices will show on the left side of the window. Click and drag the device into the window view in order to load all of the video. If not all of the cameras are wanted in view, you can click on the plus sign next to your device and it will show a list of cameras connected to the NVR. You can click and drag specific cameras onto the live view screen.

How to Set Up Email Notifications Using Gmail

Gmail will have automatic security settings that need to be disabled before configuring email settings in the NVR. You will need a computer in order to edit these settings. First, log on to your Gmail account and then click on the square icon in the upper right corner of the page. Click on Account.

Security → Scroll to the bottom until you find “Less secure app access” → “Allow less secure apps: ON”

Now that Gmail has been set to allow app access, we can move on to the NVR settings. These can either be configured through the web page or through the NVR itself.

Through the DVR/NVR: Main Menu → Network → Basic → Email

Through the webpage: Setup → Network → Email

Server Authentication: On
Username: email that you will be sending from (can be a throwaway email)
Password: password of email account
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
SMTP port: 465
Enable TLS/SSL
Can choose to attach image or not
Sender: sender name
Sender’s address: email address (same as username)
Recipient: any recipient name
Recipient address: email address of recipient
Test email

After you finish entering all of the settings and the test is successful go to Camera → Motion → Select Camera → Trigger Actions → Send Email

How to Share a Device

Each NVR can only be added by one account at a time, so if one wants to add a device onto multiple accounts they would need to share the device with one account being the “main” account. This means that one person will have the device added to their account and that person will share the device with other people. Each person still must have their own Star4Live account.

How to share the device is simple. First, you will need to log onto the main Star4Live account which the NVR has been added to. It can be done either through the computer or your personal phone.

Sharing from Computer: after logging into the account your list of added devices will appear. Click Share on the row for the device you are wanting to share.

Then a menu will appear to enter the account you want to share to, the Valid Till date, User Rights, and any Description you want to give.

Share To → can either be the username or the email of the Star4Live account you are sharing to
Valid Until → can go up to X amount of years, months, or just a few days
Permission → can choose any user rights that have already been configured on the NVR (admin, etc.)
Remarks → can give a short description to the recipient about the device that is being shared

Once all of the information has been correctly filled out, click Confirm to successfully share.

Sharing from 2M Guard Phone App: after logging into your Star4Live account on the 2M Guard app, go to your Devices and then tap on the device that you want to share. A small menu will appear. Then tap Share on the bottom of the screen.

The next window will show the device and a list of the cameras that are connected and online. You can choose specific cameras, or select the device so that the entirety of its cameras are selected for sharing.

Once your device(s) has been selected, the Share menu will finally appear. The app will ask for the same information as the computer does, but it will not give a space to fill out a description. Fill out the Share To and the Valid Period the same as you would do on the desktop instructions written above. The only other difference between the Star4Live browser and the app is the sharing Type: you will be able to choose between Role or Function.

Role: can choose a specific user or role to share to another user
Function: can choose specific functions to share to another user with Live View being automatically selected by default

NOTE: Only admin rights will allow another user to access the device through the web browser or through 2M Station because they both allow a user to make changes to the device. If you do not wish for another user to be able to make any kind of changes (viewing only), please choose the By Function type.

Once one of these methods have been completed to share the device, the recipient only needs to log into their Star4Live account and the shared NVR should show automatically under their own device list.

How to Sign Up for Star4Live Account

Star4Live is the server that we use to view NVR and camera footage over the web. Each customer needs to have an account to view and manage their devices.

This is only valid for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-2008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

Go on https://www.star4live.com/login
Click on Sign Up

Clicking on this link will direct you to a new page that will prompt you to fill out information in order to create an account
1. Username
2. Email → Acquire: will send a code to the email entered
3. Verification Code: code that was sent to email. NOTE: If you have not received anything in your inbox, please also check the Spam folder.
4. Password
5. Confirm Password
6. Service Agreement

Once all the information has been correctly filled out, click Register and your account will be ready to use.

How to Upgrade the Firmware

Every now and again, we will release a new firmware update that can either hold new features for your unit, bug fixes, or a bit of both. We have made it simple to request the newest firmware so that there is no need to wait for a file to be sent. First, you will need to make sure that your device is connected to the internet so that the NVR will be able to communicate with our servers.

Method 1: From the NVR Interface

Then you will go into the Main Menu and click on Maintain. There will be a section for Upgrade.

There are two options for upgrading:

Local Upgrade: this option is only good if you already have the firmware file loaded onto either a USB to plug directly into the device or if you already have the firmware file in a location on the computer which you are using to upgrade the device
Cloud Upgrade: this option is good if you do not already have the file on hand. It will automatically read the current version and detect if there is a newer version available

You will most likely want to choose the Cloud Upgrade option unless you have received the firmware file from Tech Support beforehand. Click Cloud Upgrade, and wait for the device to finish its search. It will either notify you that the current version is already the latest, or it will show a newer version, and the Upgrade button will highlight at the bottom of the screen.

The upgrade time will vary between 1-5 minutes, sometimes lasting longer depending on the size of the update. Once the update has finished, the device will automatically restart. It will be ready to use again once it has fully finished the reboot.

Note: Please make sure that the device does not disconnect from the network or from power because it can cause a risk in damaging the unit if there is a failed update.

Method 2: From the Web Interface

The NVR can be updated from its web page if there is no monitor connected to the unit, or if it cannot be physically accessed. From the web page, you will navigate to Setup → Maintenance → Maintenance → Cloud Upgrade → Detect or Check for Update. The process is the same as it is from the unit itself, and the same rules will apply.

How to Use Star4Live

Star4Live is the server that we use to view NVR and camera footage over the web. Each customer needs to have an account to view and manage their devices. You must use Internet Explorer in order to access all of the functions of Star4Live.

This is only valid for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

If you are using this site for the first time on a device, please make sure to install the P2P plugin. The website will show you a prompt at the top of the screen. Make sure to allow pop-ups on your browser because clicking on the link will open up a new window

When you log into Star4Live, the first page that shows is the Device Management tab which will show My Cloud Devices. Here is where you can see the devices that have been added to your account, or any devices that have been shared with you under Devices Shared To Me

In order to access a device’s web page, click on the Access icon

If the P2P plugin has been installed, the NVR web page will display automatically when you access your device. If not, you will get an error that your device “Cannot be reached.”
Once the web page has finished loading up, you will need to install another plugin to view the cameras’ live feed.
After it has been installed there will be a pop-up on the bottom of the screen that will ask permission to allow the plugin to run. You will need to allow this.

My Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory is not appearing in the device list.

Ensure your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory and Fusion recorder are connected to the same Lorex Home app account. For instructions on connecting to the Lorex Home app, see the article Lorex Fusion: Download the Lorex Home App.
Ensure that your Fusion Wi-Fi cameras and accessories and Fusion recorder are connected to the same network.
Ensure that your Fusion recorder is connected to your router using the included Ethernet cable.
Check the recorder Ethernet cable connection. Disconnect and reconnect the Ethernet cable for your system.
There may be a Wi-Fi connection issue. Restart your Fusion recorder and search for your Wi-Fi device again.

My Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory is not connecting to my Fusion recorder.

Give your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory a few minutes to establish a connection.
Check to see if your Fusion recorder has the most up-to-date firmware. New Local UI: Login to your recorder and navigate to System > Update & Reset > Upgrade, then click Check for Updates. Previous Local UI: Login to your recorder and navigate to Main Menu > Information > Update/Reset > Update, then click Check for Updates. For instructions on updating your recorder’s firmware through USB, see the article How to manually upgrade the firmware of your recorder.
Ensure that your Fusion Wi-Fi cameras and accessories and your Fusion recorder are powered on.
The same password created for your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory in the Lorex Home app must be entered in your Fusion recorder. If you have forgotten the password, then reset your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory and connect it to the app again.
(Applies to the previous local UI only) If your password for your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory is entered incorrectly in your Fusion recorder, then your Wi-Fi device will lock itself. Reset your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory and connect it to the app again.
Ensure that you are entering the password for your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory created in the Lorex Home app, and not the Lorex Home app account password. Those are two separate passwords.
Ensure that your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory is connected to a dual-band router (2.4 GHz/5 GHz bands).
Ensure that you are connecting the Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory to an available Fusion Wi-Fi channel, and not a Wi-Fi channel that already has a Wi-Fi device connected to it.

I don’t know the password for my Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory.

If you don’t know the password for your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory, then you will need to reset the device and connect it to the Lorex Home app again.

To reset your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory:

While connected to a power source, press and hold the reset button on the device until you hear the reset chime.
Open the Lorex Home app.

Tap on your Wi-Fi device’s settings (•••) icon.

Tap Remove Device.
Connect your device to the app again.

I’m receiving duplicate notifications in the Lorex Home app.

After completing the Fusion setup, your Wi-Fi camera or accessory is connected to the Lorex Home app twice – once as a single device and then a second time as a device connected to your recorder. To avoid receiving duplicate notifications from the same camera or accessory, you will need to Turn off Alerts for your Wi-Fi device connected to your recorder. It is recommended to update your system firmware to the latest version to ensure remote connectivity and to support newly added Fusion Wi-Fi devices.

What is continuous recording?

Once your Lorex Fusion Wi-Fi camera connects to your Fusion recorder, your camera’s recording settings are automatically set to continuous. This means that your Fusion Wi-Fi camera will record 24/7 or for the entire duration of the recording schedule onto your Fusion recorder’s hard drive. It is worth noting that recordings on the camera are limited due to the size of its onboard storage, while recordings on the recorder are extensive (3TB to 10TB). Continuous recording captures everything in the background, and you can playback to catch anything you missed.

How do I set my Fusion Wi-Fi camera to continuous recording?

Prerequisite

Before you start, your Fusion recorder must be powered on and connected to your router using the included Ethernet cable. Connect your Fusion Wi-Fi cameras and accessories to the Lorex Home App

Follow the Lorex Home app steps to add your Lorex Fusion Wi-Fi cameras and accessories. Refer to your camera’s documentation at help.lorextechnology.com for detailed setup instructions. Search your camera’s model number to access the product support page.

Note:

Ensure that your Wi-Fi cameras and accessories and your Fusion recorder are connected to the Lorex Home app, and on the same app account.
Ensure that your Wi-Fi cameras and accessories and your Fusion recorder are connected to the same network.
Save your device password for your Fusion Wi-Fi cameras and accessories.

Open the Lorex Home app and login.

In-app, tap the icon to add your Wi-Fi camera.

Power on your Fusion Wi-Fi camera and scan the camera’s Device QR code.
Follow the in-app steps to complete the setup.

Note: You can add one Wi-Fi camera or accessory to one Fusion Wi-Fi channel. The number of Fusion Wi-Fi channels varies per Fusion recorder. For full technical specifications, refer to the Product Specifications on your recorder’s product support page. Visit help.lorextechnology.com and search your Fusion recorder’s model number.

From the Live View display, click the pair icon from the center of the Fusion Wi-Fi channel.

Click Device Search.

Double-click on your Lorex Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory to add it.

Right-click to exit the screen, then enter your Wi-Fi device password created in-app.

Note: If your Lorex Fusion recorder and Fusion Wi-Fi camera share the same password, then the devices will automatically connect without entering the password.

Give your Fusion Wi-Fi camera a few minutes to establish a connection.

After successfully connecting to your Fusion recorder, your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory connection status turns green. For any connection issues, see the article Lorex Fusion: Troubleshooting.

Connect your Fusion Wi-Fi cameras and accessories to the Lorex Home App

Note:

Ensure that your Wi-Fi cameras and accessories and your Fusion recorder are connected to the Lorex Home app, and on the same app account.

Open the Lorex Home app and login.

In-app, tap the icon to add your Wi-Fi camera.

Power on your Fusion Wi-Fi camera and scan the camera’s Device QR code.
Follow the in-app steps to complete the setup.

Connect your Fusion Wi-Fi cameras and accessories to your Fusion recorder

Note:

You can connect up to two Fusion Wi-Fi devices on two of the recorder channels. Ensure you have two channels available. For more information, please see the article Lorex Fusion: Frequently Asked Questions.

Login to your Fusion recorder using the system user name (default: admin) and your new, secure password.
From the Live View display, right-click to open the Quick Menu, then click Camera Registration.

Click Device Search.
Check the box that corresponds with your Wi-Fi device, then click Add.

Once your Wi-Fi device has moved to the Added Device list, click the pencil icon underneath Edit.

Enter your Wi-Fi device’s password and click Connect.
Then, click OK.

After successfully connecting to your Fusion recorder, your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory connection status turns green. For any connection issues, see the article Lorex Fusion: Troubleshooting.

Lorex Fusion: Adjust Settings

The following article provides instructions for adjusting your Lorex Fusion Collection settings.

Turn off duplicate notifications

To turn off duplicate notifications:

Open the Lorex Home app.

Under your Fusion recorder, swipe left to find your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory.
Tap on your Fusion Wi-Fi device’s notification icon .

Tap on Turn off Alerts, and then Save.

Adjust the recording settings for your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory

After Fusion setup, your Lorex Fusion Wi-Fi camera’s recording settings will automatically adjust to Continuous, recording 24/7 directly to your recorder’s hard disk drive.

To adjust the recording settings (new local UI):

From the Live View display, right-click to open the Quick Menu, then click Main Menu.
Click Devices, then Record Settings. Click the Record Settings tab from the side panel.

Under Channel, select your Wi-Fi device.
Under Type, select the recording type.
- Continuous: The video will record automatically according to the time on the schedule.
- MD (Motion Detection): The video will record when motion is detected.
Click Apply.

To adjust the recording settings using the previous local UI, navigate to Main Menu > CAMERA > Recording > Recording and follow the same steps as above.

Set the recording schedule for your Fusion Wi-Fi camera or accessory

You can set a custom recording schedule according to your needs. For example, you can set the system to record continuously during business hours and record on motion detection only outside of business hours.

From the Live View display, right-click to open the Quick Menu, then click Main Menu.
Click System, then Storage. Click the Schedule tab from the side panel.

Under Channel, select your Wi-Fi device.
Check the recording type you would like to adjust, or check All.
Adjust the recording schedule as needed:
- Click-and-drag on each day to customize the recording schedule. The schedule is set up as a grid, with each block representing two hours.
- Click beside 2 or more days to link schedules (). This allows you to quickly change multiple schedules at once.
- To make fine adjustments to a schedule, click . This will allow you to set exact start and end times for a schedule.
- To disable all recording of the selected type on the selected day, click .
Click Apply.

To set the recording schedule using the previous local UI, navigate to Main Menu > STORAGE > Schedule and follow the same steps as above.

Link sensors to cameras

Once you’ve completed the Fusion setup, you can link motion and door/window sensors to any compatible camera, so that when the sensors are triggered the linked automatically cameras record.

Open the Lorex Home app.

Tap on the Sensor Hub’s connected sensors list (•••) icon.

Tap on the sensor that you want to link.

Tap on Link Camera.

Tap on the camera that you want to link.
Tap Save.

ICRealtime Password Reset and Recorder Initialization This guide will walk you through initializing the recorder properly so the password can be reset by the client without sending a technician onsite. If the Initialization steps are not done correctly, the only way to reset the password is to call IC Realtime Technical Support and use a Backdoor Password at the recorder. The steps below require a monitor or TV (HDMI or VGA) connected directly to the recorder, as well as a USB mouse.

Recorder Initialization

When the recorder boots up the first time, you will see the Device Initialization window come up. The first screen has you choose a Location (Country), Language, and Video Standard. The most important option is the Video Standard. It needs to be set to NTSC for use in the United States. When the settings are verified correct, click the Next button.

The 2nd window allows you to select your Time Zone and manually enter your time. Verify your settings and click the Next button.

On the following page, you will set the device password for the admin user account. You will be have to enter a password that has a minimum of 8 characters. Passwords are case-sensitive, and you can use letters, numbers, and the symbols found along the top row of the onscreen keyboard. NOTE: Some software (ConfigTool on Mac OS, for example) will not allow you to use anything other than letters and numbers for the password. A minimum 8-character password with a combination of letters and numbers is sufficient for security purposes, as our recorders are less susceptible to Brute-force password attacks than other devices due to the account lockout. The Prompt Question field is used to create a password reminder, which can be viewed from the login screen once the recorder has been initialized.

The next step is to create an Unlock Pattern connecting at least 4 of the 9 dots in a 3×3 grid. The pattern can be used in lieu of using the username & password on the local monitor. Left-click & hold the left mouse button to draw the pattern. If you choose to draw the pattern, you will be asked to draw it once, then draw it again to set it. Once you draw the pattern a second time, the screen will automatically change to the Password Protection screen. If you choose not to use the pattern, click the Skip button.

The last step in the process is THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP if you wish to prevent the need for a backdoor password. You will be asked to choose and answer 3 Security Questions that will allow you or your client to reset the password. You may choose meaningful questions and answer them with unique answers, or you may choose to give the same answer to each question. Each question has a number of options, which can be accessed by left-clicking once anywhere in the Question field. If you choose not to set the Security Questions, click the Green button next to Security Questions to disable them. When you are finished with the Security Questions, click the Save button to continue.

After the Device Initialization is complete, you will be taken through the Startup Wizard. Using the Startup Wizard will guide you through enabling auto-updates (although this is an option on our recorders, we do NOT yet have an upgrade server that will push out firmware updates to our cameras or recorders), general settings, Network Time Protocol (NTP) & Daylight Saving Time (DST), Network, P2P, Basic, Encode, and Schedule settings for your recorder. All of the Settings in the Startup Wizard can be configured later using the main menu. When you finish the Startup Wizard, click the OK button when you see the Thank you for purchasing our product prompt, and your recorder is ready to go.

ICRealtime Password Reset

To reset a forgotten password, right-click on the screen to bring up the System Login window. Click either the Forgot Pattern or Switch User buttons to go to the traditional login screen. There are icons to the right of both the User Name and Password fields. The icon next to User Name will show the Prompt Question that was set when the password was established when the mouse hovers over the icon. If the password is still unknown, click the Forgot Password icon to the right of the Password field . This will bring up the Reset Password – Security Questions screen, shown below.

Type the Security Question answers into their respective fields (answers are case-sensitive), then click the Next button. On the next screen, you will be asked to enter & confirm your new password for the admin account. Enter the password in the boxes next to New Password and Confirm Password, then click the Save button.

If the password is accepted, you will see the Successfully reset password message. Click OK on that message, and you will be taken to the System Login screen, where you will need to type your new password to access the settings.

Acquiring an Unlock Code

Users that no longer have credentials to login will need to fill out a Forgot My Password request using this link . An iCare specialist will work with you to facilitate this and provide an unlock code.

Prerequisites

Serial Number of unit (This will be needed to generate Unlock Codes for units purchased after 2016)
Date the recorder is currently set to (This is important in generating the proper Unlock Code as well)
HDMI Monitor and USB Mouse attached to Recorder. Login must be completed using the local GUI system. (Unlock Codes will not work through web GUI or software)

Security Question Login Method (If you have set Security Questions)

Using a mouse attached to the Recorder, right click and select “Main Menu”. This will populate the login screen. Click on “Forgot Pattern” as shown on image below.
Click on the “Forgot Pattern” as shown below.
Answer the security questions then click “Next.”
If answered correctly, you will be prompted to create a new password and to confirm the new password as shown below:

Unlock Code Login Method (If not using Security Questions Method)

Using a mouse attached to the Recorder, right click and select “Main menu”. This will populate the login screen. If your login screen requires a pattern, click on “Forgot Pattern” as shown on image below. Otherwise move to the next step.
Login with username “admin” and the Unlock code (or one of the unlock codes) given.
If successful, you may have a prompt populate as shown below. If so, create a new password under “New Password” and type in the same password under “Confirm Password.” You can also create a Password Hint. The new password setup is now complete. If you do not have this prompt, you will be logged in to the Main Menu (as admin). Follow the next steps.
In the Main Menu, go to Settings > System > Account. Click on “Add User” as shown below. You will need to create an new admin level account (group level set to admin) to modify the “admin” account. This is because user accounts cannot be modified if they are currently logged in.
Once you have created a new account, right click and go to Main Menu. Select “Shutdown” and then under the drop down, select “Logout” or “Logout Menu User” as shown below. This will log you out of the “admin” account so you can login with the new account that was set up in the previous step.
Right click then select “Main Menu.” Login with the new account that was set up in Step 4 then go to Settings > System > Account. Click on the “admin” account then click on “Modify”
Under “Old Password”, input the Unlock Code. Input a new password under “new Password” and copy that password under “Confirm Password.” Click “Save” when done.

Password Management

The management of usernames and passwords lies solely with the end customer. It is their responsibility to document and save these credentials. IC Realtime does not save your device login information and is not able to provide any user created or changed user names or passwords. IC Realtime strongly urges end customers to document security system credentials in some type of password management system, like KeePass or LastPass.

Best Practices

Document all of your credentials in a Password Management System, like KeePass or LastPass.
When setting up a new recorder, follow the Initialization process and answer the security questions. In the event of a lost password, the security questions can be answered to reset the admin password (the security questions can be the same answers. It is recommended to document the questions and answers as well)
Create a different admin level user / account as a backup as well as different accounts for lower level user access only.
Setup a password Hint. If you have this option, creating a password hint will help to remember the password.

Lost Remote Access

Remote Access is the ability to see your cameras when you are not on site and there are two ways you can get remote access for your cameras. You can connect over a Peer to Peer (P2P) connection, by using the serial number of the recorder, or by port forwarding and setting up a DDNS. First verify which one you are connecting with before proceeding.

Q. Why can I only see my cameras when I am home?

A. Your device is most likely added for local access by the devices local IP. For remote access, please refer to our help documents on setting up P2P or by Port Forwarding.

Q. Why can’t I see any cameras on my phone but it works on other devices?

A. On some systems only 1 user can log into an account at once unless you check off “reusable” inside of the account settings of the recorder.

Q. Why can’t I see my cameras after changing internet provider / WiFi / router?

A. Changing your network / network devices can cause your recorder to not show your cameras remote because of a couple reasons. If you are using P2P, you can simply enable DHCP under TCP/IP and it should allow access. If not Click Here for further P2P troubleshooting. If you are using a DDNS or static external IP then you will need to DHCP your recorder under TCP/IP and port forward your TCP port again. Once port forwarded, go to your DDNS settings under network and test the DDNS to ensure it picked up your new external IP.

Q. Why can’t I see my cameras after I reset my router?

A. If you reset your router and are using P2P then you need to DHCP your IP and it will connect again. If you port forwarded and can not see your cameras then this means the port forwarding rules you set for the recorder have been wiped. You will need to go into the router and port forward your TCP port for remote access.

Sricam SriHome Camera Setup Guide The default password of camera is 888888. During the setup procedure, you can change the password for security. The Camera Password is saved into the camera. The Camera ID and Camera Password is the only credential to access the camera.

1. The system does not detect an SD Card

Followings are a few possible reasons why this may be occurring:

1. Please power off camera before inserting SD card into camera.

2. The SD card read&write speed not good, please use a SD card with class 10 or above class 10.

3. The SD card is broken.

4. The SD card has not been formatted properly. please format sd www.sricam.com/srihome/download

5. The SD card slot is malfunctioning.

2. APP prompt “offline” when adding camera

Here are questions which may help you to shoot the issue when you use an Ethernet cable to connect the IPcam to the router:

1. Make sure the Green LED on the cable connector is flashing . If not, the connect between the camera and the router is still off.

Double check to ensure both two ends securely connected. You can also try other ports which on the router.

2. Make sure your mobile phone connect to same router or same LAN as the camera cable connecting.

3. Make sure DHCP is enabled on your router.

4. Make sure NO MAC filter enabled on your router. Or you need to disable MAC filter temporiaily before successfully configure camera.

5. When you switch from Ethernet to WIFI on the app, it will ask for WiFi password, make sure the provided WiFi password is correct.

3. Camera’s Wi-Fi is unstable and often offline

Followings are a few possible reasons why this may be occurring:

1. Check whether antenna is tightened.

2. To check Wi-Fi signal, in normally, it should be more than 3 bars.

(The distance between the camera and wifi router being too far might cause wifi signal to be less than 3 bars ).

3. WiFi channels: check if WiFi channels are busy, possibly reconfigure to “Automatic”.

4. The camera IP address conflicts with other devices, needing to set camera IP address to be a

fixed one.

5. Change the name of the wireless network (SSID): If there are different wireless networks with the same name (SSID) in your

environment-perhaps because a neighbor uses the same wireless router,a wireless repeater has the same name as the router – WLAN

devices could try to automatically connect to the wrong wireless network ,Therefore, set up a unique wireless network name in your

wireless router or repeater.

6. Set maximum transmission power:In some wireless routers, the transmission power can be reduced,which reduces the performance

of the wireless network. Make sure your wireless router has the maximum transmit power set.

4. How to delete the camera from the App

1. Open the SriHome app, and click

5. How to adjust camera’s time？

Step 1. Login SriHome APP on your smart phone and go to settings>>>>>time settings as figure 1 and figure 2.

Step2. Select your local UTC, then click “Next”, as figure 3 and figure 4.

6. Can’t connect WiFi

If you fail to setting WiFi for ip camera, please make sure your router：

1. All IP Cameras support 2.4G HZ WIFI，only some IP cameras don’t support 5GHZ Wi-Fi.

2. NO MAC filter enabled on your router. Or you need to disable MAC filter temporarily before successfully configuring camera.

3. Router’s DHCP is enabled, after setting up and setting a fixed ip address for IP camera, you can disable DHCP again.

4. The WiFi Encryption is WPA/WPA2-PSK, either AES or TKIP encryption is OK if you are not using WPA/WPA2.

There is possible using WEP. It is recommended to use WPA/WPA2 now because WEP is quite old technology and not safe nowadays.

5. WiFi Channel needs to set as AUTO in order to avoid busy channels.

Inconsistent signal, it could be due to:

1) Too many devices sharing the same internet network. Please try to disconnect other devices.

2) The IP camera is too far from the router if using WIFI connection.

• Other quality and setup issue, please reset camera to factory default.

7. Camera ID, Camera Password, App Account ID and Password

Camera ID

The camera ID is the unique identification of each camera. The camera ID can be found on the label which is attached to the camera.

Camera Password

The default password of camera is 888888. During the setup procedure, you can change the password for security. The Camera

Password is saved into the camera. The Camera ID and Camera Password is the only credential to access the camera.

Memorize the Camera Password because you need to use it when you try to access the camera from multiple devices.

In case you forget the Camera Password, you can do nothing but re-set up your camera.

If you forget the password, you can reset the cameras and then create a new password.

App Account ID and Password

When login SriHome App , you need to create a App Account ID and Password. The App account ID is unique identification of

each user account. For security, one user can only access the camera from one device. Therefore, the previous login will be force

quit (on iOS) when log in from the second device with same User Name. If you want to access the camera on multiple devices

simultaneously, multiple App account ID will be needed.

8. How to restore the camera to factory settings?

Step 1: Power on the IP Camera and wait for about 30 seconds

Step 2: Keep pressing the RESET button for about 15 seconds then release.

Then camera successfully restore to factory settings (password default : 888888).

9. SriHome App download

Method 1: Search for “SriHome” on Google Play or iOS App Store.

Method 2：Scan the QR code to download “SriHome” App.

10. Download the video to the phone and view it (Apple isn’t supported )

11. How to solve the problem that the upgraded camera cannot be turned on?

1. Please copy the entire decompressed update folder to the root directory of the SD card, the file cannot be renamed; (please contact customer service for the updated folder)

2. Then install the SD into the camera, and then power on the camera;

3. After waiting for 2 minutes for the camera to rotate and self-check, press the reset button to reset the camera to complete the upgrade process.

Notice:

1. Please ensure that the camera cannot be powered off during the upgrade process

2. If the upgrade fails, the camera will automatically restart, no need to unplug the power supply

3. If there is an unexpected power failure during the upgrade process, please contact customer service with email: support@sricam.com

12.How to reset the password of the SriHome APP account

How to Motion Detection on Lorex Devices

Set preferences for motion detection on each channel, and select channels you want to enable smart Person/Vehicle detection on.

NOTE: Depending on your system configuration, the maximum number of channels that support Person/Vehicle detection will vary. Check your recorder’s documentation for the maximum number of supported channels.

To configure motion detection:

From the Live View display, right-click to open the Quick Menu, then click Main Menu.

Click ALARM. Click the MOTION tab on the side panel, then Motion Detect on the top panel.

Select a channel to configure motion detection for.

Click to enable () / disable ( motion detection on the selected channel.

Click Setup next to Area to configure which areas of the image will be enabled for motion detection. A grid will appear on the monitor:

The camera image appears with a red grid overlay. This means the entire image is enabled for motion detection.
Click or click-and-drag to add / remove boxes from the active area. Cells that have been removed from the active area appear green.
Hover near the top of the image to reveal zone selection. You can set up to 3 different zones with different sensitivity and threshold values.
Right-click when finished.

Click Setup next to Schedule to choose which days and times of the week to enable motion detection:

Click or click-and-drag along the each of the yellow timelines to quickly add or remove time from each day’s schedule in 15–minute segments.
Click beside 2 or more days to link schedules (). This allows you to quickly change multiple schedules at once.
To make fine adjustments to a schedule, click Modify. This will allow you to set exact start and end times for a schedule.

Choose how the system will react when motion is detected:

Show Message: Check to enable an on-screen pop-up when one of your cameras detects motion. On-screen pop-up shows the channels an event occurred on and the type of event.
Send Email: Check to enable email alerts. You must configure email alerts before you will be able to receive them.
Record Channel: Select the channels that will record when motion is detected on the selected channel. Set the length of recording following a video loss event in the Post_REC field.
PTZ Activation: Set connected PTZ cameras to start a tour, pattern, or go to a preset location.
Sequence: Sequence mode will begin. Select the numbered tiles next to this option to include the corresponding channels in the sequence.
Snapshot: Select the numbered tiles next to this option to save a snapshot of the corresponding channels.
Buzzer: Check to enable the system buzzer.

Click Smart Motion Detection to enable Person/Vehicle detection:

Click Enable to activate Person/Vehicle detection on the selected channel.
Select a Sensitivity level (a high sensitivity value will detect smaller objects than a low value).
Check Person/Vehicle.
Click OK when finished.

Click Apply.

LHB Series: Recording time for motion detection

When a Wire-Free camera detects motion, the camera streams live video and records for a set period of time before returning to Standby mode. You can choose how long each camera records for when motion is detected.

REMINDER: In order to conserve battery life and decrease the amount of footage for review, continuous live-streaming and recording is not available with Wire-Free cameras.

To configure recording time:

In the Live View, click the Main Menu icon () > Settings > Camera.
Select the channel for the camera you want to configure.
Select the duration the camera will record video for when motion is detected (10s, 20s, or 30s).
Click Save to set the recording time.
Click OK.

REMINDER: If motion is detected within the final 2 seconds of the preset Camera Recording Time, the system will record an additional 10 seconds of video to ensure the entire event is captured.

LHV / LNR Series: Enabling snapshots during Motion Detection Alerts

The first step to setting up snapshots is to enable them in your LHV / LNR Series DVR / NVR menu. Click here for more information on enabling snapshots. Snapshots can be saved during motion detection alerts and can be sent to you in an email attachment.

Prerequisite:

Ensure that you have set up motion alerts

To save snapshots during motion detection alerts:

In the motion detect window click the Snapshot checkbox.
Click OK to save settings.

To locate and review your snapshots:

Right-click on the Live View window to open the Quick Menu.
Click Main Menu, and then click the Search icon ().
Click Search.
Click PIC.
Select a date to search.
Click the File List button () to see a list of snapshots for that date.
Click the Play Forward button () to view each snapshot.

To enable snapshots as email attachments (optional):

Right-click on the Live View window to open the Quick Menu.
Click Main Menu, and then click the Setting icon ().
Click Network > Email.
Click the Enable checkbox to turn on email notifications.
IMPORTANT: Email must be configured to receive email notifications
Click Test to send a test email.
Click OK to save settings.

LHV / LNR Series: Enabling motion detection

You can configure your LHV / LNR Series DVR / NVR system to record motion detection events.

To enable motion detection:

Right-click on the Live View to access the Quick Menu.
Click Main Menu and then click the Setting icon ().
Click Event > Motion.
Click the Motion Detect tab.
Select the channel to be configured and check the Enable checkbox.

You are now ready to configure your motion detection settings. Refer to your user manual for details on available options for your system. Click here for downloads and documentation for your product.

After enabling motion detection, you can set a schedule for the recorder to run motion detection during certain times. Click here for instructions on how to set a motion detection recording schedule.

LHA / LNK Series: Configuring motion detection settings

You can configure your LHV / LNR Series DVR / NVR system to record motion detection events.

The following instructions require you to access your system using your DVR / NVR and a monitor.

To enable and configure motion detection:

In the taskbar, click the Main Menu icon (), and then click Settings > Alarm > Motion.
In the Channel drop-down, select a channel to configure motion detection.
In the Enable drop-down, select Enable.
In the Buzzer drop-down, select the duration the system will beep when an event triggers,‎ or select Disable to disable the buzzer.
In the Sensitivity drop-down, select a sensitivity level for motion events. The lower the sensitivity value,‎ the more movement is required to trigger motion detection. It is recommended to select a Sensitivity between 30~70.
Click Setup to configure the areas of the image that will be enabled for motion detection. The red grid indicates the active area for motion detection. Click and drag to add / remove the active area.

REMINDER: Motion detection will be disabled for areas of the image without red overlay. Disabling motion detection in certain areas of the image is an effective way to eliminate unwanted recordings and notifications caused contact movement like trees blowing in the wind or regular traffic.
Once you complete setting your active motion detection area, right-click anywhere on the screen to exit.
In the Post Recording drop-down, select how long the system will record video for after motion is detected.
Select the actions to occur when motion is detected:
- Show Message: Display a message on the system when motion is detected.
- Send Email: Receive an email notification when motion is detected. Ensure you have enabled email notifications.
  - Set up email notifications using the Lorex by FLIR email server
  - Set up email notifications using your own server information
- Full Screen: Check to have video from the selected channel appear in full screen when motion is detected.
- Record Channel: Record video from the selected channel(s)‎ when motion is detected.
  - Numbered Boxes: The channels to record when motion is detected. Click the checkbox to select all.
Click Save to save your motion detection settings.
Click OK.

Ensuring accurate person and vehicle detection

The following are important camera installation notes to ensure accurate Person/Vehicle detection on compatible security systems. For your specific camera’s mounting instructions, search for your camera model number at lorex.com.

Angle the camera so that objects of interest appear in the bottom ⅔ of the camera image.
Choose a location where objects of interest will be no further than 50ft (-15m) from the camera.

Lower accuracy for objects further away than 50ft (~15m) and/or in the top ⅓ of the image.

Optimal accuracy for objects within 50ft (~15m) and in the bottom ⅔ of the image.

Angle the camera between 30~60° down from the level position.
Install the camera between 8-16ft (2.5-5m) off of the ground.

NOTE: Accuracy of person and vehicle detection will be influenced by multiple factors, such as the object’s distance from the camera, the size of the object, and the height and angle of the camera. Night vision will also impact the accuracy of detection.

Additional Installation Tips:

Point the camera where there is the least amount of obstructions (e.g., tree branches).
Install the camera where vandals cannot easily reach.
Secure cabling so that it is not exposed or easily cut.
This camera is rated for outdoor use. Installation in a sheltered location is recommended.

DVR – Face Recognition

The D861, D862, D871 series recorder is equipped with face recognition. You can configure the system to detect faces and respond with various actions.

To configure face recognition:

Step 1. From the Live View display, right-click to open the Quick Menu, then click Main Menu.

Step 2. Click EVENTS, then click the Face Recognition tab on the side panel.

Step 3. Select a camera to configure face recognition for.

Step 4. Click to enable / disable face recognition on the selected channel.

Step 5. Click Setup next to Schedule to choose which days and times of the week to enable face recognition:

Click or click-and-drag along the each of the blue timelines to quickly add or remove time from each day’s schedule in 15–minute segments.
Select 2 or more the days to link schedules. This allows you to quickly change multiple schedules at once.
To make fine adjustments to a schedule, click settings. This will allow you to set exact start and end times for a schedule.

Step 6. Click Setup next to Target Face Database.

Check the box next to the face database that you want to use for Face Recognition.
Click OK.

Step 7. Click to enable Unfamiliar Face Alarm. Setup alarms if a face has been detected that has not been added to the face database (also labeled “stranger” in AI mode).

Step 8. Click the icon under modify to adjust the Similarity value.

Enter a value for the Similarity from 1% being the lowest to 100% being the highest.
Click OK.

Step 9. Click the icon under Parameters to set the alarms for face recognition.

Step 10. Click Apply to save all changes.

Congratulations! You have successfully configured face recognition on your D861 Series recorder.

How to create a face database?

To build a face database, you can create a face database list and add faces to each database from a USB drive or live captured faces in AI mode.

To create a database:

Step 1. From the Live View display, right-click to open the Quick Menu, then click Main Menu.

Step 2. Click EVENTS, then click the Face Database tab on the side panel.

Step 3. Click Add in the bottom right of the screen to add a new database.

Step 4. Enter a name for the database.

Step 5. Click OK.

The created database will appear in the face database list.

How to add a face to the database by USB?

To add a face to the face database:

Step 1. From the Live View display, right-click to open the Quick Menu, then click Main Menu.

Step 2. Click EVENTS, then click the Face Database tab on the side panel.

Step 3. Select a database from the list and click the details icon to configure.

Step 4. Click Register to add a face to the database. The USB drive will automatically load.

Step 5. Click + to upload a new face image.

Step 6. Use the Register window to add additional information to the face entry, including name and gender.

Step 7. Click OK to save.

The added face will appear in the face database.

Add by USB Drive (Batch Add)

Face pictures can also be imported in batches which is useful when adding a large number of faces at one time.

Add Captured Faces

You can add images to build the face database by using images that have been captured in AI mode.

NOTE: To capture faces using Face Detection, AI mode must be enabled in Live View. From the Live View display, right-click Quick Menu and hover over the Live View option. Click on AI mode to enable.

How to add a face captured by AI mode?

To add a face captured by AI mode:

Step 1. From the Live View display, AI mode will display recently captured faces on the right side of the screen.

Step 2. Double-click on the face that you want to add.

How to Motion Detection on Lorex Devices

Step 3. Click the button Add to Face Database for the register window to appear.

Step 4. Check the box next to the database that you want to add the face to.

Step 5. Add additional details for the face entry including a name.

Step 6. Click OK to save. The added face will appear in the face database.
