Important Installation Guidelines

The optimal installation location, including the height and angle of your camera, will depend on the type of detection settings that you want to enable. Since the optimal angle for person and vehicle detection is different from the optimal angle for face detection, you will need to select one approach.

Note: You cannot enable both face detection and person and vehicle detection at the same time.

How to reset my DVR’s password?

If you forgot your recorder’s password, there are two ways to reset it.  

1 – If your recorder has a reset button, press and hold it for 10 seconds; you will hear an audible confirmation. This will reset all settings, including the password, but will not erase recorded footage on your hard drive. 

2 – If your recorder doesn’t have a reset button, contact us using an online form to receive a reset password: 

     a) The current date on the DVR’s interface. 

     b) The MAC address of the DVR, which you can find under the System Information tab. Click the (i) information icon at the bottom right of your DVR interface. You don’t need the recorder to be unlocked for this. You can also get the MAC on the Camius View app and the Camius Device Config Tool.

Is my DVR / NVR recording? How to set up security camera recording?

This guide applies to Camius DVR (digital video) and NVR (network video) recorders. To confirm if your Camius DVR or NVR is recording, check the recorder’s front panel HDD LED. The red blinking light indicates the DVR or NVR is recording.

Recording Schedule

Then navigate to Setup >> Record >> Record Schedule to check each camera’s schedule.

By default Normal schedule is enabled, which stands for 24/7 continuous recording.

For the rest of the schedules, you need to select and save the recording type you need (Green is for Normal, Yellow is for Motion, Purple is for PIR (applicable to Camius 4K spotlight cameras with PIR sensor), I/O is for recording triggered by external alarm devices connected to the DVR or NVR).

Set the Record Schedule, apply, and copy to other channels if needed. Once it’s done, you will have access to the recording of the event not only on your NVR but you can also play them on your CAMIUS VIEW smartphone app.

Suppose you enable push notifications triggered by Motion, PIR, or AI (Human & Vehicle Detection) but do not have a short clip for playback. In that case, the record schedule was not set for this camera.

Optimizing storage and extending recording period

Camius 2K and 4K cameras can be set by the Camius NVR to record at 4K, 2K, 1080P, or 720P.

You can reduce hard disk usage by reducing the bitrate for low-foot-traffic cameras from 4096 Mbps to 2048 Mbps, which can double the total recording period. Recording settings are available under the Mainstream

How to check the HDD status and format it

How to set the Date and Time on your Security DVR or NVR Recorder

If you set Date and Time on your new DVR or NVR, go through Startup Wizard >> Date and Time.

Synchronizing your recorder’s internal clock with your local Date & Time is essential; here are the steps:

1- Set your local time zone relative to GMT, for example, with Daylight Saving On:

2- Set the date, time, and formats manually.

3- We recommend enabling NTP (Network Time Protocol), which synchronizes date & time over the Internet. Click the checkbox, choose one of the servers, and click Update Now.

4- Enable DST for Daylight Saving Time. Once done, click Next.

To change Date and Time in the NVR’s menu, navigate to System >> General >> Date and Time. 

Once you set the correct time on your NVR, click Apply to save settings

How to back up recorded CCTV footage on the NVR or DVR?

The Search function provides you with the ability to search and play previously recorded audio-video footage and snapshots that are stored on your Camius DVR or NVR recorder’s hard drive. You can play videos that match your recording schedule, manual recordings, or events only. Additionally, the Backup function allows you to save important events, including both audio-video recordings and snapshots, to a USB thumb drive.

Connect Monitor, Power Supply, USB Mouse

After you unpack your new DVR, locate the power supply and USB mouse that is included. Connect the mouse to the USB port on the front or back of the DVR. The USB mouse is the easiest way to navigate the user interface of the DVR. You can also use the IR remote control if you prefer. Please note that a wireless remote is not included with iDVR-PROA models.

Next, connect a monitor to your DVR. Even if you do not plan on keeping a monitor connected to your DVR because you will manage your DVR over your network, the initial setup still requires a monitor to be connected.

Supported Monitors

Please note that all iDVR-PROs models have an HDMI and VGA monitor ports. YOU MUST use a widescreen format HD monitor that supports one of the following video resolutions.

1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) is recommended for the best experience.

Connect the power supply included with your DVR to the power input on the back of the DVR, then to a power source (wall outlet). The DVR will boot up.

Test Cameras Before Installing

If you are using any new cameras with your iDVR, we highly recommend bench testing them before you mount them. What does bench testing mean? It simply means that you connect each camera to a power supply and monitor before you mount them. This can be accomplished by connecting each camera to your DVR and viewing them on the monitor that you connected to your DVR.

Testing your cameras before installation has the following benefits.

 Confirm all cameras are working properly before mounting them.

 Opportunity to also test all of your cables if you are using premade CCTV cables.

 Configure video inputs on DVR for CCTV. AHD, or HD-TVI type cameras (details below).

 If any of your cameras use an OSD or varifocal lens, it gives you the opportunity to get familiar with these operations, which is much easier to do on the ground rather than up on a ladder.

In spot monitor mode, can use the HDMI output as the main monitor and VGA as a spot monitor or vice versa. This is a good solution for users that need to see a continuous live view their security cameras on one monitor and use the other monitor for DVR management such as general viewing, playback, settings, etc. You can watch a demo video here.

Dual Monitor

In dual monitor mode, both the HDMI and VGA outputs the main display (mirror mode). Dual monitor mode is supported by A and H model iDVR-PROs.

Spot Monitor

iDVR-PRO8H and iDVR-PRO16H models support spot monitor mode, in addition to dual monitor. This allows one monitor to display a customizable continuous live video feed, while the other monitor displays the main monitor for DVR operations such as configuration and recorded video playback.

HD Spot Monitor Setup

Follow these instructions to select between dual monitor and spot monitor modes.

1. By default, the iDVR-PROM and H series DVRs are to set to output duplicate displays on both the VGA and HDMI outputs.

To set up one of the displays as a spot monitor, select Menu > System Setup > Display > Dual Monitor.

Next, change the Display Mode from Duplicate These Displays to Main Monitor + Spot.

Once we have it set to Main Monitor + Spot, to the Display Type and set which monitor you would like to run as the Main Monitor and select which you would like to use as the Spot.

NOTE: We recommend keeping the Display Resolution set to Auto. This way it picks up the best resolution for your monitor’s spec.

2. Next, you can setup custom display screens and camera ordering for the Spot Monitor display. Click the Edit button next to Spot. You can now select the Add View Type button to select the cameras you would like to display on the Spot monitor. You may configure up to 16 displays that consist of single, quad, 9 channel, and 16 camera screen views.

Once you have the cameras / views setup, you can select the Apply button. That is it, you have successfully setup the iDVR-PRO DVR to run Dual Monitors.

Legacy Model Spot Monitor Support

Our legacy, non HD iDVR-PRO models (analog CCTV only), use an analog BNC output for the spot monitor. You can refer to this article for analog spot Monitor Output Setup information.

Surveillance Video Recording Setup for iDVR-PRO HD H.264 CCTV DVRs

Follow these instructions to set up the surveillance video recording type for iDVR-PRO HD security camera / H.264 DVRs from CCTV Camera Pros.

Recording Modes

iDVR-PRO CCTV DVRs support the following recording modes.

Setup Instructions

To configure the recording mode that you want to use, hover the mouse cursor over the lower part of the screen. The DVR main menu will appear. Click Menu > Record Setup.

The following screen will be displayed which shows all of the recording modes that the DVR supports.

If you want to set up a recording schedule for continuous, motion, or alarm based recording, you must click the drop-down box on the above screen and change the mode from autoconfiguration to manual configuration. Autoconfiguration sets all cameras to record at the max resolution and frame rate for continuous, motion, and alarm type of recording.

If you select manual configuration, you can set different choose a different frame rate, resolution, and video quality / compression for each camera (even for different time frames). Using the mouse, select the recording type that you want to set up.

Continuous Recording

If you select manual configuration then continuous recording, the following screen is displayed which lets you setup unique configurations for each camera and you can also click on the schedule tab to set a schedule for when each camera will record continuously (effectively making this scheduled recording mode).

Motion Detection Recording

If you select manual configuration, then motion recording, the following screen is displayed. One this screen users can choose the resolution, frame rate, quality, and whether audio recording is on or off (surveillance microphone required) for each camera when motion is detected.

Users may configure each camera for motion detection recording by selecting the motion sensor option under the camera menu. Users can turn motion detection on / off, enable an icon to be displayed on the screen when motion is detected (Mark field), and sensitivity level for each camera. Users can also define specific zones within each camera view for motion detection by selecting the edit area button.

The below screenshot shows how to mark the door in this room as the only area that motion detection will be applied to.

Alarm Recording

If you select manual configuration, then alarm recording, the following screen is displayed. One this screen users can choose the resolution, frame rate, quality, and whether audio recording is on or off (surveillance microphone required) for each camera when an external alarm (such as door sensor, PIR motion sensor, etc) is triggered.

Intensive Motion Detection Recording

Intensive Motion / Alarm Recording

This mode is also very similar to intensive motion recording. If you select intensive motion / alarm recording, then you may configure different recording resolutions, frame rates, and video quality for when each camera is recording continuously vs. when an alarm is triggered or motion is detected. The idea behind this recording mode is to conserve space when there is no alarm or motion (by recording at a lower frame rate and resolution) and record at a higher resolution, higher frame rate and quality when an alarm is triggered or motion is detected.

Panic Recording

The panic recording settings control the video resolution, frame rate (FPS), video quality and whether audio surveillance is on or off when panic recording is triggered on the DVR. Panic recording is enabled when a user presses the panic button on the front of the DVR or from the user interface menu using a mouse. When panics recording is enabled, this overrides any current recording mode (schedule, motion, alarm, etc. and sets all cameras to continuous recording).

Anyone who uses video motion detection with a security camera system knows that it can be tricky to get the motion settings just right in order to avoid false alarms. It is especially tricky with outdoor security cameras because of all the things in nature that create motion. CCTV DVRs typically have sensitivity and motion mask areas to help. This article will guide iDVR-PRO surveillance DVR users of how-to setup the sensitivity settings and motion detection mask areas so that video motion detection can work as effectively as possible with little or no false alarms. NVR is short for Network Video Recorder, a device which acts as a hub for an IP-based security camera system. It is a storage and review point for your CCTV which means you don’t need to sign up to remote service to store your video.

That means, of course, it’ll need cameras, typically connected by power-over-ethernet (PoE) cables (see our guide to the best PoE cameras), and a storage medium like a hard drive.

Retailers often package the same NVR in several different bundles, mixing up the types and numbers of cameras and hard drives, or simply leaving this all to you. There are real bargains to be had with some of these all-in-one kits, and the only real downside is some spectacularly confusing product names.

An NVR, incidentally, is not quite the same thing as a DVR (or Digital Video Recorder), which appeared in the late 90s. They look similar and store video too, but a DVR is built to accept and digitally compress analogue or digital video via coax sockets; an NVR expects a digital input.

The advantage of an NVR-based security system is that, because the video is being compressed by the cameras, local processing power is available for AI functions like detecting movement. This, in turn, means you don’t need to dig into your wallet for a subscription service; both storage and AI analysis are provided by a device you own rather than a service you lease. 

Given that subscription services usually only store the clips their AI identifies as significant, having your own NVR may give you the power to review every moment yourself rather than being dependent on an algorithm to parse the events your camera sees. All the advantages of networking like remote access and – of course – the ability to work with all IP cameras, wired or wireless, remain.

We look at some of the key features in detail at the end, but something else to remember if you’re in the USA is the China trade war; major security player HikVision have already fallen victim to US internal bans on new products and may end up on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list. 

Key features to look out for are remote access, PoE (Power over Ethernet), which can simplify wiring, hard drive capacity (indeed if any drives are included at all), the resolution limit, the number of channels or cameras it can handle, and if there are any means of backup. Remember that a 4K camera uses more data throughput than a 1080P one, so an NVR can handle fewer of them – this is where the compression method (e.g. H.264 or H.265) can make a big difference.

Some security pros might not appreciate the non-traditional approach with only clips recorded when the cameras detect motion. The flip side is that the NVR is a more accessible experience. 2: Amcrest 5 Series NV5232E-16P

Best DVR for multi-brand compatibility

While not everyone will need the 320Mbps throughput, if you’re looking for a powerful NVR which affords some flexibility when it comes to choosing your cameras (and don’t mind paying for that) then the Amcrest 5 Series seems to have that in the bag. Eight of the sixteen Ethernet sockets are PoE, likely enough for most customers though it seems a shame they weren’t all enabled.

We certainly can’t complain about the level of effort which seems to have gone into usability in what is not always the most user-friendly product category; a great example is the QR codes to bring up quick remote viewing via the Amcrest View app.

The device is certainly not the cheapest on this list, given the list price doesn’t’ include a hard drive and you’ll need at least one – likely two unless you opt for the motion detection mode. It does, however, offer some of the features of subscription services via the app and web features, as well as the advantages of a hardwired device; not to be sniffed at.

Best NVR for uninterrupted security

Swann has always built innovative systems, and this is no exception. Adopting an elegant upright design, the NVR PowerHub is the basis of several new Swann packs including the AllSecure650. We like this system not only because of the elegant design, but because it offers so many options in a small package. It also, brilliantly, turns the main annoyance of battery camera systems to its advantage; an extra battery is included (total of 3 for a 2 camera bundle).

The extra battery lives in the hub, where it not only charges but offers backup power backup in case of an outage. When you need to swap a camera battery you have a spare, ready to go, so you can swap it with one – rather than two – trips up the ladder to the camera.

It does not, however, ditch all the functionality of a traditional NVR as it attempts to blend into the home or small business. While you can control nearly everything via the app, as well as enjoy remote access, there is also a mouse socket and HDMI port for use with a monitor. Synology offer multi-drive RAID storage systems – many which can take on a little monitoring on the side – and devices like this built with it front and center. There is the power to drive AI on up to 16 streams of video including separating people from animals, intrusion detection and even license place recognition. Businesses can even use the AI system to detect whether face mask rules are being complied with. This AI also helps distinguish threats in poor lighting thanks to the GPU power. Recording can be backed up across drives or both can form a single volume

As well as HDMI connection for a monitor, the device can be reached remotely via iOS and Android apps and on virtually any computer via a browser interface. The USB 3.2 ports (front and back) offer keyboard and mouse connection.

Best DVR for reviewing video history

Despite having only one SATA bay, the Reolink system makes a lot of room for storage by adding an eSATA socket at the back. The system is also typically bundled with its preferred Reolink 4K cameras which provide stand-out sharp footage which is easy to review thanks to the fresh modern interface. Reolink also offer a great variety of cameras and a doorbell.

Built-in operating systems can be a tad clunky, but connect the supplied mouse to the NVR and the Reolink interface, whether on 4K TV or VGA screen, is a bit clearer. The 24/7 recording is accompanied by a timeline which highlights events (people or vehicles) and can be filtered as you browse. While it doesn’t sound a lot, in practice most CCTV reviewing is for these things.

When connected to your local network via the LAN socket, assuming an internet connection, the system can use the same alert tech to send specific activity alerts to your devices.

Best NVR for affordable plug-and-play

Clearly built for practicality, the Annke H800 makes connecting a USB drive easy without re-positioning by adding an extra USB socket at the front as well as the rear one for the mouse.

The in-built OS isn’t beautiful, but actually very smart; you can choose to disable motion detection by zone on each camera view and, even as you refine the detection, you see a handy live view of where the algorithm is spotting action. Other handy features include quotas for individual cameras to prioritize some recordings drive vapacity.

The system includes event-driven or “Smart” timeline review of recorded video, the latter allowing you to search video for movement within areas you specify – a handy tool for finding if someone went into a specific corner of the shot after the fact.

Best DVR for AI features

What shines out with the Swann system is the more advanced facial recognition tools which put person/vehicle recognition in the shade. Yes, generalized person or vehicle alerts are still very useful, but Swann allows the known faces can be named. That makes specific alerts possible if, say, one of the kids gets near the treats. That is the kind of benefit consumer smart cameras offer, built on with integrations with Alexa and Google Assistant, but without the cost of a subscription.

A third USB socket covers mouse, backup drive and downloading to a USB stick
without needing to unplug anything – usability plus. 

On the down-side, pet detection does require a cloud subscription (perhaps that just feels a worrying threshold to cross). Best NVR for smart home integrations

This elegant-looking NVR actually has the same sockets as most other 4K 8-channel systems from the back, but is chic enough to sit comfortably under a living room TV. There the central panic button, which triggers all lights & sirens built into connected cameras, could end a home invasion.

The main Lorex NVR software also allows you to set up effective deterrence rules using person and vehicle detection and features area search for easier review.

There is a similar level of design polish in the remote access app save for one thing; if you do connect wireless and wired cameras you’ll need to tidy up the alerts yourself to avoid duplicates. 

We also appreciated that the Apple TV wasn’t forgotten; and smart home fans will love the ability to add sensors (like gate or door opening) as well as cameras via a Lorex Sensor Hub.

A RAID system with security-friendly extras

As well as dedicated NVRs, Synology are synonymous (sorry!) with all sizes of data storage devices. While many entrust their data – especially with limited amounts of it – to the cloud, there are many reasons to have a physical backup system. Hot-swappable drives mean every piece of information can be backed up within the device, and a network connection means it is available via your home network, or remotely.

Since the machine is essentially a small computer, it can run apps on its own OS, from Mail Server to (more relevant here) Synology Surveillance Station. This lets you use some of your overall drive space to store video from your connected security cameras.

10. CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4

For those who want to make security a hobby experience

Make no mistake, this is not the same approach as the other products on this list. This isn’t a ready-made box with all the necessary PoE sockets to connect a series of cameras to but, since an NVR is essentially just a computer in different clothes, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the enthusiast community is continuously refining software to power NVRs.

If you feel motivated to build your own, why not start with a Raspberry Pi 4? Unless you’re only using USB cameras, you’ll also need a PoE Ethernet Switch (like the BV-Tech) and certainly some kind of storage (it’s unlikely the microSD card slot in the Pi will cut it for long, but many folk already have a spare external hard drive lying around). From there it’s simply a matter of choosing an OS and a piece of software; Shinobi is available for free and supports ARM architecture, as does ZoneMinder, so there are two good starting points.

Best NVR for big multi-camera set-ups

If you need a more powerful NVR – with greater camera capacity – than the NV4108E above, then Amcrest have you covered; the 4216E-AI supports up to two 8GB drives inside and has 16 PoE ports for cameras on the back, all capable of 4K resolution. The system is happy with H.265 and H.264 and has a high-speed throughput of 200Mbps, dropping to 80Mbps when the on-board AI functions are active. This sacrifice buys you human and vehicle detection (and search in recordings), offering functionality to compete with the subscription services from Google Nest and Amazon Ring among others. Amcrest’s App is similar in scope. The machine even has microphone sockets for two-way-talk from the NVR.

12. xmartO WNQ28

Wi-Fi NVR which can keep your CCTV separate from home network

If you’d like to install a CCTV system with some of the advantages of your own NVR, but aren’t interested in undertaking the cabling, then the WNQ28 seems a rational choice. It eschews the PoE network switching components in favor of two antenna to create its own wi-fi network which you can connect cameras and viewing devices to. xmartO also include their “G3 Auto WiFi Relay” feature which can use cameras to extend the network.

With or without this, the advantage of this device is that it keeps CCTV cameras on a different frequency from your home’s potentially already heavily taxed wi-fi (an issue many of us are starting to notice as high-speed broadband becomes more common). On the down-side it offers a fairly generic Linux-based OS and doesn’t have high bandwidth, while it definitely prefers xmartO cameras. Nevertheless it definitely helps keep things separate when building your network, so we can see some DIY fans strongly preferring this.

When creating a hostname, you would put in the hostname spot a name or address that is easy to remember. For example, if the hostname is myhost211 and the domain is set to ddns.net when it is created it will look like “myhost211.ddns.net”

Once your DDNS is created, you can go into your system’s Main Menu > Network > DDNS page and select NOIP for the DDNS type. Then you would type in your login information to the username and password area of the system and type in the full domain name.

If setup correctly NOIP will Dynamically update the IP as needed on its own. NOIP is a subscription service so if you do not have a subscription you will need to manually re-apply for your DDNS once every month.

To enable this on older DVR’s pre 2015 you may need to go to Settings > Network > Advance Settings > DDNS and Double click on the setting then Enable it.

With the DDNS configured on the system you will need to then port forward your router with either the TCP or HTTP ports for your system.

The Default ports that need to be opened for the Blue / Black line systems are TCP 80 for Web and TCP 37777 for the Apps.

You can set up Alarm Event / Trigger Actions for the cameras on their corresponding Alarm

or AI page.

For Example on the system under Main Menu > Alarm > Motion Detection > More you can enable it to Send Email alerts whenever there is a motion event.

This can be applied to any screen with the Send Email function.

Date & Time Setup

In order to change the Date and Time you will need to go to Main Menu->System

Inside of System Settings navigate to the General Tab on the Left and Date & Time. Enter in your System Time. You may change the Format of the system time from a 24 Hour clock to a 12 Hour clock if you prefer. You may enter the Daylight Saving Time settings under “DST”.

Be sure to Save your System Zone and click Apply at the bottom when you are done.

Remote Viewing on Mobile Devices

To access your recorder remotely you must first connect it to your modem or router using an Ethernet cable and power on the recorder.

Go to Main Menu->Setting->Network–TCP/IP and Enable “DHCP” Inside of the Network settings and Save.

*Some models require you to click “Edit or Modify” next to NIC1 to find the DHCP option to enable.

Make sure DHCP is enabled. Click OK at the bottom.

Be sure to Save / Apply these settings before moving on.

Navigate to the Main Menu-> Setting -> Network -> P2P (sometimes called Easy4IP) Enable P2P at the top of the menu and select Apply

Your P2P status will show “Online” now. If P2P shows “Online” you can proceed to the next steps in this guide.

If you are still getting an “Offline” status

You may want to leave this menu up since we will be using the Device SN QR code in the next few steps.

Downloading SCS Pro on your Mobile Device

.

You must use our mobile application SCS Pro on your iOS or Android device. This can be found in the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store. Search for SCS Pro and download our free application.

Launch SCS Pro once it has been downloaded from the App Store or Play Store. Select your Region / Language. Once you are on the Home section of SCS Pro. Click on the + Icon at the top right corner. Select SN/Scan. Scan the Device SN QR code found on the right hand side of your P2P menu on your DVR or NVR. This screen may still be up on your system if you are following this guide. Once the code has been scanned you will see the Device SN appear on your device. Click Next.

Select DVR/XVR or NVR. Enter a Device Name, your username (admin) and the Password you use to log into your DVR or NVR with. Click Save. The Live View will appear once the device has been saved.

Note: If your P2P status shows “Offline” your cameras will not connect. Please make sure your system is connected to a router or modem with Internet service with an Ethernet cable and that DHCP is enabled.

How to Setup Motion Detection Regions

.

The following guide will show you how to adjust the Motion Detection Region settings on your system

Navigate to Main Menu->Alarm

Select Video Detection on the left Column. Then you will select Setting next to Region

on the right hand side

Once you select Setting you will see the camera come up in full screen with Red blocks. At the top of the screen you can adjust the Sensitivity and Threshold of the Motion Detection.

This should be adjusted if you feel the Motion is not recording accurately.

Sensitivity is how sensitive the motion detection will be. The lower the number the less recording you will get. Recommended range is 40-80.

Threshold is how much motion needs to occur in order to trigger the recording. Adjust this only if you plan on recording larger objects (Cars/trucks) only and would like to filter out smaller objects (People/Animals)

The areas in Red is where the camera will detect motion. This means the recording will only start when motion occurs in the Red areas. If motion occurs in an area that is not Red, the system will not record that event. You can click and drag with your mouse to make the adjustments.

Once you have created the areas that you would like recorded when motion occurs,

Right Click with your mouse and then select Apply to save the settings.

Motion Detection Setup

Your DVR/NVR is setup to record 24/7 right out of the box. There is no need to follow this guide if you would like to continue recording 24/7. If you would like to conserve some of your Hard Drive space please follow the guide below.

We have now successfully setup a Motion Detection Schedule. We now want to make sure Motion Detection is Enabled for each Channel. This can be done by going back to the Main Menu → Alarm

Inside of the Alarm Settings Click on Video Detection. Make sure to check each Channel number and Click the Enable Check Box. Do this one Channel at a time. NOTE: Do not use the Copy button on this menu!  Apply once all Channels have been enabled.

Port Forwarding Guide

.

Step 1) Make sure you have an Ethernet cable connecting your DVR and your router. Step 2) Enable DHCP mode on your DVR in the Network tab and reboot the system. Step 3) Go back to the Network screen and make note of the IP address.

Step 4) Enter the IP address of the DVR in to your web browser to verify it’s connected with Web Service.

Step 5) Log in to your router and find the Port Forwarding section, if you are unfamiliar with configuring your router, contact an IT professional.

Step 6) Forward ports 80/37777 using TCP protocol to the IP address of your DVR (Info and services for port forwarding can be found at www.portforward.com)

Step 7) Use www.canyouseeme.org to test the ports are open, you should see ‘Success’.

Step 8) Your public IP address may change so we recommend utilizing a Dynamic DNS service like Quick DDNS or NO-IP.

PLEASE NOTE: We recommend using Peer-To-Peer (P2P) instead of a port forwarded connection for security and reliability reasons. P2P is available on most CCTVSecurityPros models as of 1/1/16.

Sharing Remote Access / Configuring User Permissions

How to connect the device to the mobile app

1. Please connect DVR system to the Internet:

b) “User Name” fill in the user name set during the first use. If you are not sure, you can click”Setup”-“System”-“Multi-User” to view.

c) “Password” fill in the password set during the first use, which is the login password of the user DVR / NVR.

How to upgrade your NVR or DVR

1. Copy the firmware file(.sw file)to your USB drive, and insert the USB flash drive into the NVR’s USB port.

2. Click Select File button to choose the firmware file in your USB flash drive, then Click OK.(Setup-System-Maintenance-Upgrade)

3. Click Upgrade button to start system upgrade. The system upgrade will last around 5-10 minutes, please do NOT power off the NVR or remove the USB from NVR during firmware upgrade.

How to modify the address bit of your Sunba Analog Camera?

Principle: All non-coaxial PTZ cameras on the same system must have unique address bit. If your camera can be used with a single BNC cable, then you do not have to setup address bit. 

For non-coaxial, we mean PTZ cameras that need the RS485 cable for connection.

Before changing the address bit of the camera, please first try to understand what the address bit is:

For example you have a 16CH DVR with many BNC ports on the back of DVR that can connect to 16 different analog PTZ cameras. All of them will connect to the same RS485 port to gain PTZ control. Each analog PTZ camera has an address bit, like its unique identifier. Note the default address bit of the camera is 1. This can be double-checked by cut the power of the camera, and restore it, you should see a script of Pelco D ADDR 1 shown on the screen after it finishes its self-diagnostic process.

So imagine if all 16 cameras have the same address bit of 1, if you try to move one camera, all 16 will move together because by having the same address bit, they lost the unique identifier and the DVR doesn’t know which one it should control. So if you have more than one analog PTZ camera, you should always try to modify the address bit of the second camera into any number other than 1 (normally we just go by 2, 3, 4, 5 etc for easy purpose but as long as it is not conflicting it is fine).

So if you only have one PTZ, you do not have to worry about it. With a 2nd Sunba analog camera you bought, you should start changing the address bit of it by going to its OSD menu (preset 95 + call):

You must first go to the corresponding preset control panel of your DVR (usually together with the PTZ control panel). 

The Call button from the DVR below (Sunba DVR) is named as “start”. It may be different in your DVR’s interface.

Use Up and Down arrow key to select items and use right direction key to confirm.

The 1st item in the OSD menu (see picture below) is the soft address.

Two tricks: 

1. After you successfully modified the address bit, please reboot the camera to take effect! After you restore the power, the camera will go through the diagnostic process again and a few sec later you will see the new ADDR display on the screen.
2. If two cameras have the same address bit, you will need to first remove one unit and modify the address of one camera each at a time, otherwise if you use preset 95+call the OSD of both cameras will be open given they have the same address bit.

FINALLY, after you changed the soft address in OSD menu, please go to the PTZ Config menu of the camera (i, and change the address recorded by the DVR to match the value you just changed.

How to set up automatic scan for Sunba Analog PTZ camera?

Automatic Scan is usually defined by PTZ as left and right boundary scan, meaning the camera will rotate from one point to another continuously. This can be done by using the preset function of the camera.

You must first go to the corresponding preset control panel of your DVR. 

For Sunba 604-22X analog camera, please refer to the corresponding manual to get the value:

1. Add Preset 47 to set the left boundary of the camera.

2. Add Preset 48 to set the right boundary of the camera.

 

3. Call Preset 82 to activate the left/right boundary scan.

The Call button from the DVR above is named as “start”. It may be different in your DVR’s interface.

Is there an additional dome cover for the camera?

Please note if the camera is infrared, then it is unable to put a plastic cover on it because it will interfere with the infrared lights coming through.

You will need to use infrared transmissible materials to make such a cover. However, that will result in additional expenses.
That’s why infrared cameras are usually not covered.

If you put cheap plastic cover around your infrared camera, then at night it will generate blurry images.

However, if you are not interested in having the infrared feature, you may be able to put a plastic cover around the camera.

Our 502S and 205 series are infrared-free and thus has an external plastic cover.

My analog camera shows Black and White display only

There are generally 3 different possibilities when this occurs:

1. First, please check the camera is in your local video format. For example, if you live in U.S.A, your local video format must be NTSC, then if you have accidentally switched the video format to PAL, the camera will display B/W image only. This may also happen after a camera default.
2. If you have an AHD 1080P camera, and your DVR is not AHD 1080P but HD-TVI, HD-CVI or HD-SDI, then it is likely that you will see black and white image only caused by incompatibility.
3. If you have accidentally turned the infrared on, you will see black and white images only.

Solutions correspondingly:

1. In NTSC video zone with your camera changed to PAL, if you use Sunba’s DVR, you will see a capital P with a red cross next to it. You can use 95+CALL to go to camera’s OSD menu, and under “camera”, you can see the signal of the camera.To change the signal from PAL to NTSC, please use the special preset code 97+118. First, call preset 97 and then call preset 118.To change the signal from NTSC to PAL, please use the special preset 97+119. First, call preset 97 and then call preset 118.
2. In this case, you will need to either return the camera or change into compatible AHD 1080P DVR (aka. AHD-H DVR).
3. Please use preset 102+call to turn the infrared to “AUTO” mode.

TIPS: What does XX + CALL Mean? Example for 95+CALL below: Every DVR should have a built-in PTZ control panel on the screen. With Sunba’s DVR, for example, you enter 95 in the empty preset box next to the control panel and hit “start” to call preset 95, which opens the OSD menu of the camera. The “start” button may have other names in different DVRs; it may be called “enter”, “call” or “go to” depending on the specific manufacturer you use. Please refer to the manual of your DVR if you want to learn the specific way of setting up/calling preset. Here is a video if you don’t know how to call special presets:

 

My PTZ camera does not respond to joystick/PTZ controller/keyboard

No matter you are using Sunba joystick and would like to control your PTZ camera from another manufacturer, or you are using other joystick to control Sunba PTZ camera, the general troubleshooting process (for the inability to gain PTZ control) should be the same:

1. Please first check the +/- polarity of the camera and joystick. Try switching the order of the pair if it doesn’t work.
2. Please make sure your greenish RS485 connector is functional. This has happened before.
3. Please make sure your twisted pair is functional. You can try switching to another twisted pair if it is defective. An ethernet cable has 4 different twisted pairs that you can switch.
4. Please make sure you set the correct soft address of the camera in the PTZ Controller/Joytick/Keyboard. The default soft address of Sunba camera is “1”. It is very easy to check Sunba camera’s soft address; every time Sunba camera is powered up, the monitor will display its current soft address. In Sunba PTZ Controller, for example, if the camera has soft address “1”, please press “1” in the keyboard and then press “cam”.
5. Make sure the RS485 twisted pair is not short, meaning the metallic part from each line of the pair are not overlapping. See picture below.

My Sunba analog camera cannot PTZ

1. Please first check the +/- polarity of RS485 twisted pair between the camera and DVR (or Joystick).

The package comes with a white RS485 adapter that you can connect it to the orange and blue end coming out of the camera.

 

In most cases, the blue end corresponds to +/A (positive) of the DVR’s RS485 port and the orange end corresponds to the -/B (negative) of the DVR’s RS485 port.

So the wiring would be as follows:

In the above diagram, the twisted pair (RS485 cable) has red/blue wire. The red wire was connected to the blue RS485 end out of the camera. We already know the blue end corresponds to +/A (positive side) of the DVR. Thus, on the DVR’s end, the red wire would be connected to polar A.

However, as we tested more and more DVR and back-end, we noticed that different DVR has different polarity orders.  For example, with Sunba DVR, the blue goes to A/+. But for other DVR, blue goes to negative, and we do have customers reporting that. What’s more, for different analog ptz cameras, the polarity may also be different on the same end-device (joystick/DVR). Switching the order of the pair on the DVR side may be helpful.

A simple fix is to switch the polar order on the DVR (joystick)’s side. See the red arrow below:

 

Try switching the order of the pair if it doesn’t work. This would generally solve most of the problem! 

 

2. Please make sure your white RS485 and greenish RS485 connector are both functional. It happened before that the greenish RS485 is defective. We suggest that you test the functionality of the connector using a reference camera.

3. Please make sure your twisted pair is functional. You can try switching to another twisted pair if it is defective. An ethernet cable has 4 different twisted pairs that you can switch. Parallel pairs without twisted part are not recommended for PTZ control because they are not protected against any forms of signal interference and will affect the PTZ capacity of the camera.

4. Please make sure you set the correct soft address of the camera in DVR. The default soft address of Sunba camera is “1”. It is very easy to check Sunba camera’s soft address; every time Sunba camera is powered up, the monitor will display its current soft address. Not, no different PTZ cameras can have the same address bit otherwise if you control one camera the other will move; in short, address bit must be UNIQUE for each unit. Also, if you have set the address bit of the camera, please go to PTZ Config menu of the camera to set the corresponding address that matches the camera’s soft address:

5.Make sure the RS485 twisted pair is not short, meaning the metallic part from each line of the pair are not overlapping. See picture below.

6. If your camera is running a long DC extension power cable and causes underpower, the camera is also unlikely to get PTZ functioning. Please connect the camera directly to its AC power adapter and have a try.

My Sunba analog camera doesn’t show any video

In terms of the no video issues, there are plenty of possibilities:
1. Though we’ve tested the camera before shipment, it is likely the BNC wiring tail get damaged during transportation (distinctly chopped or squeezed). In this case, we will definitely send you a replacement cable. [this happens only rarely on 301 model, whose wiring tail is separate]
2. Test the camera with another BNC cable. Sometimes the BNC cable can get short or has unstable video connection.

Try tightening or twisting the BNC RG59 connector part.

Alternatively, test the BNC cable on another analog camera you have.
3. Switch the camera to another BNC video channel on DVR. Some channel connector can be defective. It happened very very rare though.

 

4. If you purchased 301-3X, 405-22X or 604-22X CVBS signal and the video disappeared after using the camera for a while, please make sure the camera is still in CVBS signal, and not being accidentally transferred to AHD which will cause black screen for incompatible DVR. If this happens, you can use preset 97+117 call to revert back to CVBS signal. Please first call preset 97 immediately followed by preset 117.

5. Another possibility is also rare but worth checking. If you have an AHD DVR, it is possible the analog channels are grouped such that cameras in channel 1&2 must have same resolution, same for channel 3&4 etc because the internal structure for traditional AHD DVR has two consecutive BNC channels built on the same chip. If resolutions for cameras in channel 1&2 don’t match (e.g: channel 1 has 720p and channel 2 is 960H), one of them will lose video.

 

6. Camera incompatible with your DVR. Please send the model to support@sunba.net for examination.

Sunba Analog PTZ Camera : Underpower Issue

Different from bullet cameras and IP cameras, analog dome cameras have higher power requirements, especially when the infrared lights (night vision mode) are on.

The camera may behave reckless if it does not receive enough power at night. So in the daytime the camera may work fine; at night time, however, the camera requires a 12V to work properly.

Typical Symptoms when underpower: 

1. The camera pans itself continuously
2. Screen flickering
3. Camera reboots again and again over night

The final actual voltage arrives at the camera depends on the type of cable you use as well as its distance and initial voltage.

There is a site called “voltage drop calculator” by calculator.net where you can calculate how much drop is along the specific type of AWG cable you use. If you have a meter, you can also test the voltage at the end of the camera and see whether it reaches 12.

To rule out whether the issue is really caused by power shortage, a bench test is always recommended. For a bench test, you can use the default power adapter that came with the package (without any forms of extension) to power the unit.

If the camera works fine at the bench but not working when connected to DC extension cable, all you need to do is replace it with an AC extension cable, or replace to another DC cable with lower AWG (thicker).

What screws do I have to use for installing the camera?

Fundamental Standard:

We do not offer bolt with the camera as there are too many types available and the application is very critical and depends on where/how you would like to install the camera.

For example, many people are using the camera with their pole or corner mount that has smaller hole size as compared to the camera’s mount bracket. So you will probably need one size smaller.

Also, if you are installing the camera on wood board, you generally will choose self-tapping screws for safety concerns.

Similarly, if you are installing the camera on concrete, it is recommended to use concrete expansion bolt (or expansion anchor).

Brick walls are also different. These are the variables we are unable to control by the time of shipment.

Why only half 1/2 of the IR LEDs are on? Is my camera defective?

The short answer is, the camera isn’t defective and what you see is normal. And below is why:

Sunba IR lights work in a same way as vehicle lights; you only need low beam to view nearby objects, when your camera isn’t zoomed in.

Thus, if your IR is in “AUTO” mode (this should be the default you are in), when you focus at near objects, the IR lights are half on. And when you “zoom in” and look at distant objects, the other half IR lights will be on as the high beam. Meanwhile, the low beam side will be OFF to avoid any extra light interference. In other words, you can change the focal length to adjust the IR lights.

Alternatively, you can manually control IR lights using the “presets call” method. For example, using “103+call” as a special presets code (just enter 103 in the preset box and hit either “enter” or “go to” or “call” depending on the software you use), you can turn on BOTH sides of the IR lights.

However, both sides of IR may not necessarily increase the visibility at night due to light interference. That’s why auto high beam and low beam are designed to be separate.

Another thing you can do is to change the photo sensitivity of the camera by going to the menu (95+CALL). This is a threshold that you can control. You probably want to adjust it to make it less sensitive to the streetlight (more easier to be switched to night mode under “IR Auto”),or the other way around, depending on the installation environment.

How to Reset the DW Spectrum Password of a DW Blackjack® MINI Server

Forgotten Passwords

The DW Blackjack® MINI (server) and DW Blackjack® NAS (storage) are headless devices with no local display-out option, meaning that these devices rely upon the use of the DW Spectrum Client software to interact and configure settings for the DW Spectrum System instead of connecting a display monitor and other peripherals to the DW Blackjack hardware.

It is worth understand that the Administrator login to the DW Blackjack device is a different/separate set of login credentials from what is used when connecting to the DW Spectrum® System. Essentially, there is a difference between the hosting device and the software application that is being hosted by the hardware.

In circumstances where a DW Blackjack MINI is acting as the primary server for DW Spectrum, the DW Spectrum password has been forgotten, and you are unable to use the desktop client application to connect and manage the server settings, the local devices settings of the DW Blackjack MINI will need to be defaulted to reset the DW Spectrum login.

This article will outline how to reset the settings for a headless DW Blackjack MINI to default the DW Spectrum login. Additionally, how to submit a request to reset the password of the DW Blackjack® MINI system itself, if it is needed as well.

**NOTE:  Please be aware if the DW-BJMINI or DW-BJNAS is part of a merged DW Spectrum® System. If so, you may use the DW Spectrum® Web Client or desktop client software to change the DW Spectrum admin password.

**NOTE:  The process for resetting the DW Spectrum® login requires that the local settings of the DW Blackjack MINI’s media server be defaulted.  As a result, you will need to use the DW Spectrum Client or web client to reconfigure the media server settings.

Before Submitting a Password Reset Request

If the login credentials to the DW Spectrum® IPVMS software program are unknown, it is recommended attempt to log in to the DW Blackjack unit itself with its default credentials before having to default any settings or submitting a Password Reset Request to DW Support.

1. Using a computer that shares the same network as the DW Blackjack MINI or NAS, open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, IE, etc.) and use the DW Blackjack device’s IP address to connect with the server’s web interface.

1. URL structure:  http://<IP_Address>:Port
2. Default IP Address:  192.168.1.200
3. Example URL:  http://192.168.1.200:80

If the IP information for the unit is unknown, you may scan the local network for the DW Blackjack MINI or NAS using the DW IP Finder software from the computer. Alternatively, consult with your Network Administrator for the network address if applicable.

1. Upon reaching the login portal, enter the login for the DW Blackjack device, then click the Login button. The default login credentials for the DW Blackjack MINI and NAS are identical.
   • Default Name:  admin
   • Default Password:  admin1234

**NOTE:  If the login to the DW Blackjack MINI or NAS is unknown and a password reset is required for the DW Blackjack MINI or DW Blackjack NAS, please submit a Password Reset Request with DW Support (see below).

1. After logging in to the DW Blackjack unit’s web interface, select the System tab.

Next, click the “Factory Reset” button. This will completely reset the DW Blackjack MINI or NAS unit’s local device settings and the Administrator login to the DW Spectrum System.

When prompted, enter the administrator credentials of the DW Blackjack devices to reset the system settings – including the default DW Spectrum Administrator password.

By using a DW Cloud profile to access DW Spectrum Systems, users can connect with the various systems that their DW Cloud accounts have been registered to, all from the comfort of a single instance of the DW Spectrum Client.

Forgetting the password to your DW Cloud account will prevent you from being able to access any DW Spectrum Systems that have been associated with your DW Cloud account.

Resetting a DW Cloud Password

To reset a DW Cloud Password:

1. Open a web browser and visit the DW Spectrum Web Portal

How to Assign Passwords to DW MEGApix Cameras

Password Requirement

As of August 13, 2019, in compliance with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Digital Watchdog now requires the assignment of a custom password to new DW MEGApix IP cameras.

Upon initially accessing a MEGApix camera for the first time, the administrator will request that a password be created for the camera. The camera password can be set using either the MEGApix camera’s web interface or by using the DW IP Finder application.

This article will outline how to use the MEGApix camera’s web interface to set an administrator password for the first time, as well as how to use the DW IP Finder application to change the passwords of multiple MEGApix cameras simultaneously (bulk password).

**NOTE:  The camera login credentials and the user’s DW Spectrum IPVMS login are two separate instances. What is used to log in to a DW Spectrum System is a different set of credentials entirely.

Before Beginning

After initially connecting a MEGApix IP camera to the local network, the camera will use a DHCP protocol and can be assigned an IP address by DHCP devices (router, smart switch, etc.) to match the connected subnet. However, in the case that a DHCP network device is not present or if the camera must otherwise have an IP address assigned manually, you can use the DW IP Finder desktop application.

Downloading DW IP Finder

DW IP Finder features a Bulk Password Assignment feature that allows users to assign an administrator password to multiple MEGApix cameras simultaneously.

Pre-built DW Blackjack Servers will ship with DW IP Finder already installed. However, if you need to install or update DW IP Finder (v4.4.16 or higher), you may acquire the latest version from the DW IP Finder product page.

Bulk Password Assignment with DW IP Finder

When setting up new cameras, it is at the installer’s discretion to either apply a different password to each camera individually or to use the same login credentials for all cameras. However, it may be best to have all cameras use the same login credentials for the purposes of easy camera management and use of the DW Spectrum IPVMS management software.

To apply a bulk password assignment for multiple MEGApix IP cameras using DW IP Finder:

1. Launch the DW IP Finder application on your computer.

The computer must be connected to the same local network as the cameras for the software to detect MEGApix cameras.

2. In DW IP Finder, click in the Network dropdown and select the network card that is connected to the MEGApix cameras.

Click the Scan Devices button to detect connected MEGApix IP cameras.

**NOTE:  By deselecting the Thumbnail checkbox in DW IP Finder before scanning, wait time will be reduced.  The wait time between network scans vary depending on the number of devices connected to the network.

3. After detecting the cameras, use the checkboxes to select the cameras that you will be assigning a new password to.

If multiple cameras are selected at the same time, they will all be assigned the same login credentials. You can check the All box to select all the detected cameras.

4. When ready, click the Bulk Password Assignment button.

5. The Bulk Password Assignment window will display.

Under Current Account, enter the current Username and Password of the camera(s).

• • Default MEGApix Username:  admin
  • Default MEGApix Password:  admin

Under New Password, enter the new Administrator password for the camera(s) in the “New” field and reenter the new password in the “Confirm” field.  It is optional to include a password reminder in the Hint field.

**NOTE:  Passwords are required to use a minimum of eight (8) characters with at least four (4) combinations of uppercase letters (ABC), lowercase letters (abc), numbers (123), and special characters (!?$).

6. Click the Change button to apply the new login credentials to the camera(s).

Individual Camera Password Assignment with Web Interface

When initially accessing a MEGApix IP camera, you must set an administrator password for the camera.

Using a web browser, the administrator can adjust camera settings by connecting to a camera’s web interface.  After logging into the camera’s web interface for the first time, the camera will request the password change.

**NOTE:  Camera login credentials can only be adjusted one camera at a time when using a browser.

To change a camera’s password using the web interface:

1. Open a web browser and enter the camera’s IP address to connect with the camera. The URL model to connect with the camera is:

  • Port: 80
  • URL: http://192.168.1.80:80

2. After connecting with the camera with a web browser, enter the Username and Password of the camera.
   • Default MEGApix Username:  admin
   • Default MEGApix Password:  admin

3. If the MEGApix IP camera is still using the default login credentials, users will be prompted to set up a new password before the camera can be used.

Click the Change Password button if the camera is using the default login credentials.  If the login has already been customized, click the Setup button.

4. A Change admin’s password window will display. Enter the new password for the camera in the Password field and again in the Retype Password field.

It is optional to create a Password Hint for the camera password.

**NOTE:  Passwords are required to use a minimum of eight (8) characters with at least three (3) combinations of uppercase letters (ABC), lowercase letters (abc), numbers (123), and special characters (!?$).

5. Once satisfied with the new password, click the Change Password button to apply the changes.

Adjusting Camera Access in DW Spectrum IPVMS

If you are using DW Spectrum IPVMS to view and manage your security cameras, authentication for access to the camera must be configured for DW Spectrum after changing the login credentials of the MEGApix IP camera(s).
