The below guide will initially** be split into 3 key sections with multiple sub-sections:

Single Module Setup (Video Intercom Module)

The reason we have decided to cover it this way is that the modular nature of the solution means there are too many variations to cover specifically, so instead we will cover the details of the 3 most common setups and once you know the basics of all 3 any combination of modules should be achievable.

(**IMPORTANT – This will be a continual work-in-progress thread and we will add new posts with explanations of new features & settings as we test the intercom further and learn things from customers & Hikvision Support, this initial post will basically be a contents page for the entire thread)

Single Module Setup (Video Intercom Module)

The Single Module setup is the entry-level intercom solution for smaller residential & business installs, for this solution you will need:

1 x DS-KD8003-IME1 Video Intercom Module Door Station (or -IME1/Surface if you want the surface mount included)
1 x Indoor Station
1 x iVMS-4200 Client Software

Setting up the Video Intercom Module

Step 1 – Connect the Video Intercom Module to a source of PoE (either a PoE Injector or Switch)

Do NOT directly connect the Intercom to the PoE ports on an NVR as this stops the device being visible on the local network

Step 2 – Install & Open iVMS-4200

Step 3 – Go to Maintenance & Management > Device Management > Device and click Online Device
.

Step 4 – Select the Intercom module from the online device list, click Activate and set a password for the device
.

Step 5 – Once activated you will need to click Net Info (small world icon) and change intercom’s network details to match your own network
.

.

(If you know your local network details and have a specific IP address in mind you can manually set the IP and gateway address, if you do not know your network details you can tick DHCP, enter the device password, click OK and DHCP will automatically assign an open IP address on your network to the device)

Step 6 – With the Network details set you can now select the device from the Online device list and click Add to add the device to the iVMS software

Setting up the Indoor Station

It is possible to run the Video Intercom without the Indoor Station but that requires all calls from the Intercom to go to the iVMS software, setting up this way means you have to have a dedicated PC running iVMS-4200 24/7 and that PC would need a camera and/or microphone connected to it for calls to be answered. This solution only really makes sense for installs where you will have security staff to monitor the system. (e.g. Shopping centres, large office buildings, etc…)

For most setups, especially single module setups, using the Indoor Station is much easier and more discreet (small screen can be wall-mounted or stood on a side table) way of completing your Intercom solution. The Indoor Station can be set up in 2 different ways, using iVMS-4200 or directly using the touchscreen, if you set up and activate using iVMS-4200 then the initial steps are identical to those for the Intercom shown above.

The only different step is after you have activated and added the Indoor Station to the iVMS software you will need to click Remote Configuration for the Indoor Station and go to Network > Linked Network Configuration > and set the (Main) Door Station IP address to the IP address of the Video Intercom to link the 2 devices together.

(If you are planning to use iVMS-4200 instead of the Indoor Station then you need to make sure the Master Station IP address is set to the IP address of the PC running iVMS-4200, if you don’t know the PC’s IP address you can use this forum guide to help you find it. Even if you are not using iVMS as your main access point of the intercom we would still recommend entering the Master Station address.)

If you are setting up via the touchscreen then you simply follow the wizard guide (shown below) which is basically just a simplified version of the step discussed above.

(The only step during the touchscreen set up that you won’t automatically see in iVMS set up is step 3 shown below – Indoor Station Type – this step is important if you are connecting multiple indoor stations to the intercom and we will discuss this in more detail in the 3-module set up section. For now, if you are only using one monitor or this is your first monitor of the set up just leave it as the defaults shown in the picture)

Once you have both devices activated, added to iVMS, and linked to each other the basic setup is almost complete. The only other things we would mention are to check firmware, you can follow these links to find the latest firmware for the Video Intercom and the Indoor Station and once you have downloaded the firmware you can go to Remote Configuration > System > System Maintenance and load the firmware.

Finally, for now, we would also recommend that you check which device the Intercom is calling, if you go to the Video Intercom in iVMS and click Remote Configuration > Intercom > Dial > you will see a page with the options to call Management Center (iVMS-4200) or Call Indoor Station, depending on your specific setup make sure the right option is selected and Save that setting.

Three Module Setup (Intercom, Indicator, Keypad)

A 3 module setup is something you are more likely to find on a small apartment block or a medium-sized office building with multiple businesses inside where you might need a name tag module and/or keypad module to call different flats/offices. The steps to activate and add a three module intercom to iVMS are exactly the same, the only difference is the steps you perform before powering the Intercom on and a few settings after everything is activated.

For the specific three-module solution we are talking about in this guide you will need:

1 x DS-KD8003-IME1 Video Intercom Module Door Station
1 x DS-KD-IN Video Intercom Indicator Module
1 x DS-KD-KP Video Intercom Keypad Module
1 x DS-KD-ACW3 Surface / -ACF3 Flush Mounting Accessory
1 x Indoor Station
1 x iVMS-4200 Client Software

(Obviously, any of the sub-modules can be used in a 3 module setup but we settled on these 2 as they are a common choice for the examples I mentioned above and are also easier to set up than some other modules as they have no settings of their own)

Sub Modules & Dip Switches

The first thing you have to do when setting up any multi-module intercom solution (whether that’s 3, 6, or any number/combination of modules) is to set the Dip Switches on each sub-module.
.

There is a table and instructions in the manual provided with the Intercom as to how to set the Dip switches, but for absolute beginners, these instructions are not all that clear so I will expand upon them here.
.

Each Intercom setup can have a maximum of 8 sub-modules connected to the initial Video Intercom module and each module features a set of 8 dip switches/digits on the back. The first 4 switches/digits are used for coding the unique addresses of each module (1-8), digits 5,6,7 are reserved and should be just left OFF and finally, there is digit 8 which is a 120Ω resistor and should be set as ON on all modules.

As you can see from the above table each sub-module address has a unique layout of ON/OFF switches/digits and each module you add to your setup can only use one of the 8 module addresses once in that setup, so once you add your first module and set it to address 1 no other module connected to the same Video Intercom can also use address 1.

The best way to set the sub-module addresses is sequentially based on how you have them laid out. So in our example of a 3 module layout, we have the Indicator module as the 1st sub-module using address 1 (ON/OFF/OFF/OFF) and the keypad module as the 2nd sub-module using address 2 (OFF/ON/OF/OFF).

Once you have the Dip switches set you can link the sub-modules together and connect them all back to the main Intercom module using the Module-Connecting cables that come with the Intercom module and/or the mounting accessory.

(IMPORTANT – If installing with the Surface mount, make sure before connecting the module cables that you have threaded them underneath the crossbars that divide the different module spaces on the mounting brackets as shown in the user manual and the below image. If you don’t you will trap the cables as you try and fit the modules into the bracket and you won’t be able to secure the modules without damaging the cable.)

Once you have all the modules connected you can then connect the Video Intercom module to your PoE source, slot all the remaining modules into the mounting bracket, and screw the front cover of the mounting bracket back on to secure the modules.

At this point, the activation and adding to iVMS process is exactly the same as with the single module set up and so you can just follow the steps from the first section of this guide to activate the Intercom and sub-modules, as well as activating the Indoor Station.

Setting Room Numbers & Unlock Codes

After all the steps are completed and you have everything added to iVMS-4200 then there are 2 key things you will need to look at in relation to this example 3 module setup that is using the keypad & Indicator modules.

The first thing is room numbers, if you are using one or multiple indoor stations as individual stations that you want the ability to call from the main intercom using the keypad then there are some settings you need to check. Go to Remote Configuration for each Indoor Station you have in your setup and click Intercom > ID Configuration > and you will see the below options:

Device Type – There are 2 options, Indoor Station or Station Extension, for our demo setup we will leave it as Indoor Station as we only have the one station that we need to reach.​

Call/Room No. – depending on the number of Indoor Stations you have this can be set to any number between 1-9999, as we only have the 1 station we will leave it as 1.​

​

Floor No. – again this depends on the location of the indoor station so that if you have 2 rooms on different floors that for example are both labelled room 10 you can have both indoor stations set to room 10 but each one have a different floor number set so that both stations still have unique ID numbers. Again the floor number can be set as any number between 1-9999​

As mentioned above the stations do support up to 9999 room/floor numbers but this is not the max. Number of stations the software supports, each iVMS client can only support a maximum of 512 Indoor Stations and the room/floor numbers only go higher because the building you are installing the system in may use a certain numbering system and may have room & floor numbers higher than 512. (e.g. an apartment on the 10th floor may have room number 1020 to signify floor No. and room No. on that floor)

The other Device Type mentioned above is Station Extension and this makes a chosen Indoor Station slave to the main Indoor station, you link the slave Indoor Station to the master Indoor Station by entering its (Main) Door Station address as the IP address of the master Indoor Station and then when the Master Indoor Station is called then all the Station linked to that master via Station Extension will ring at the same time. When you select Station Extension you have to set an Index No. which has to be between 1-5 as the maximum No. of extensions that can be connected to one master station is 5.

Once you have set the room and floor No. for all your indoor stations and all the stations are linked back to the Video Intercom module or are set as extensions to other indoor stations, then you can use the keypad on the intercom to type in Call/Room No. + Floor No. + # key and the intercom will ring that selected indoor station. (If you only have one floor of indoor stations then just enter the Call/Room No. + # key instead)

The 2nd thing to set up after room numbers is unlock codes/passwords, if you have wired a magnetic door lock, motorised gate, or similar access control device to the intercom then you will want a password you can enter on the keypad to unlock/activate those access control devices.

There are 2 ways to set these unlocking passwords depending on if you want to set a public password which you can share with multiple people or a private password if you have lots of individual apartments/offices and you want to give each their own access password. For the public password you will need to go to Remote Configuration of the Video Intercom and click Intercom > Permission Password > and you will see a drop-down to select 1 of 3 passwords (you can have a max. of 3 public passwords) and 2 boxes to enter and save the new public passwords.

(If you have set any of these passwords before you will also see an Old Password box and will have to enter the old password before changing it to new password)

Once you have saved 1, 2, or all 3 public passwords you can then go to the keypad module and type # + (Public Password 1/2/3) + # and you should get an audible confirmation that the door/gate is unlocked and the unlock icon on the indicator module should light up as well.

The process for setting a private unlocking password is almost exactly the same, the only difference is that the password is set in the Indoor Station settings and not the Video Intercom. When you go to Remote Configuration > Intercom > Permission Password > for the Indoor Station you will see 3 different Password Types to choose from:

Arming/Disarming Password – this connects directly to the Zone Alarm setting so that in a scenario where you may have alarm devices linked to the Intercom (e.g. burglar alarm, PIR motion detector, smoke alarm, etc…) you can use this password to quickly arm and disarm the alarm devices connected to the intercom when you leave or arrive at the property.​

Unlocking Password – This is the private door/gate unlocking password​

​

Duress Code – In a scenario where someone is threatening you and/or forcing you to enter the unlock code for the door/gate, you can set a duress code that is different to the other 2 passwords and when you enter it the intercom will give you the same audible and visible notification that the door is unlocked. But it doesn’t unlock the door and instead sends a notification to the iVMS software to alert a member of security staff.​

In our demo scenario, we only need to set the unlocking password, by default the unlocking password is set to 888999 so you will need to enter this in the Old Password box before entering and confirming the new password and saving this password.

Once the Password is saved you can go to the keypad module and just like with the public password enter # + (Unlocking Password) + # and the door/gate should be unlocked.

And that is all the basic functions and settings of a 3-module set up using the Keypad and Indicator modules.

Getting Started with ClareVision – WiFi Cameras

Overview

The following article provide the following information:

• Setting up your WiFi camera
• Configuring motion, image, and event settings
• Adding the camera to the ClareVision App

 Step One: Connect the Camera to Your LAN

To add the camera to a WiFi network, first connect the camera to the Local Area Network (LAN) through a router, modem, or network switch.

1. Using an Ethernet cable, connect the WiFi camera to a router, switch, or modem that is on the network you would like to configure WiFi for.
2. Power up the camera using the included power supply (Bullet and Turret cameras)
3. Once the camera has connected to the network, use the IP Search Tool to discover the camera IP Address.

IMPROTANT: The WiFi Turret (CLR-V100-4T36WF-W) and Bullet (CLR-V100-4B36WF-W) do not support POE. You must connect the camera to the network using an Ethernet cable and power the camera with the included power supply.

Step Two: Discover the Camera

All Clarevision cameras ship with DHCP turned on. DHCP simply means the router will assign an IP address to the camera when it boots up using the LAN IP address scheme. Example:

• Router IP Address: 192.168.1.1 (typical)
• IP address range that may be available: 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.255
• Router will assign an address like this: 192.168.1.x, where x can be any number between 2 and 255.

1. Install and launch the IP Search Tool and select “Search”
   
2. Open a Chrome or Edge browser and input the WiFi camera’s IP address into the URL field on your web browser
   
3. Input the default username and password.

IMPORTANT:

The default username is: admin

The default password is the first six characters of the UUID. The UUID can be found on the camera label or the quick start guide. If those are not available or inconvenient, you can use one of these methods found HERE to discover the UUID.

Tip:

When you login, you will be asked to change the password and answer security questions. Make sure you configure the security questions and store them. If you do not and you lose the password you will have to go to the camera and physically reset it.

Step Three: Update the Camera to the Latest Firmware Release

Clare Controls releases camera firmware with new features about once every four months. Chances are, your camera will need to be updated when you take out of the box. The camera firmware database is located here.

1. Log into the camera and go to the Configuration > System Configuration > Device Information to review the firmware version.
2. Cameras with version numbers where the last 3 digits are lower than 30.x will require you to to to the maintenance tab and upload the firmware to the camera you retrieved from our website. Cameras with version numbers greater than 30.x will have online update services directly from the web console as shown below:
   
3. Simply click on the “Check” button and the camera will check our servers for an update and if available ask you if you want the camera updated. Updates take about 3 minutes.

Step Four: Configure the WiFi Settings

Make sure the camera is connected to a router, switch, or modem before proceeding with the next steps.

1. Select WiFi Configuration on the home page or navigate to Configuration > Network > Advanced Setup > WiFi.
   
2. Tap Scan to discover available WiFi 2.4GHz WiFi networks.
   
3. Select the desired WiFi network you would like to connect the camera to.
   
4. All fields should automatically populate when you select a WiFi network. Input the WiFi password into the Key field.
   
5. Check DHCP if you would like the network to assign the network parameters automatically. Leave this field unchecked if you would like to manually configure settings such as IP Address, Netmask, Default Gateway, and Preferred DNS Server.
   
6. Tap Save to complete and save your configuration.
   

Step Five: Configure the Video Stream

Video stream: the IP Camera streams one or more streams to mobile apps, NVR’s and integrated systems. The video settings control the configuration of those streams. Image settings control the parameters that affect the way the image is captured.

The video stream is configured through two basic menu items: Video and Image.

ClareVision Cameras are configured for best optimal settings out of the box. You will most likely not need to adjust settings unless specific settings require it. You can adjust image settings under Configuration > Image > Image Adjustment.

Tip:

We have configured the encoder for H.264 encoding on all streams. You may want to encode the main stream (stream 1) using H.265 as it requires about 50% of the network bandwidth and 50% of the HDD storage space vs. H.264. We set the main stream to H.264 because certain control systems and mobile phones do not decode H.265. You can tune this to your application.

Step Six: Configure Events

Events are the heart of the intelligent camera. All configuration is found under the Configuration Tab/Events. Events are broken into two categories: motion and smart.

The standard configuration for events from the factory is as follows:

• Motion detection: enabled, full field (entire field of view
• Motion sensitivity: 5 (medium) – will detect a human about xx feet for Value Series and yy for Performance Series
• Motion record calendar: 7×24
• Motion event arm calendar: 7×24
• Motion record: main stream (except V100 4mp, which is set to sub-stream)
• Smart event: disabled

1.   Determine whether you want to use Smart Events or Motion Events:

• 1. Smart Events: detects human objects only and is quite accurate. Use this when other objects, like vehicles are not required. Smart events include intrusion zone, line cross detection, loitering and people gathering. False positives with Smart Events are very rare.
  2. Motion Events: detects motion of any kind (human, package, vehicle, animal)

Tip:

When using the camera stand alone, do not set up more than one event type (motion, smart). It is the event arming action that sends the event to the push notification server and the recording engine inside the camera. The camera will only record ONE event type (motion OR smart). If you arm both, you will get both event types sent to the user as push notifications but only one will record. The user could then receive a push notification for which there is no recording.

Step Seven: Configure Storage

While you may store events locally to the SD Card and to an NVR at the same time, in this example, we will discuss the SD Card storage only.

1.   Go to Configuration > Storage > Recording Schedule.
Set the storage schedule and event type you wish to store.

Tip:

It is the COLOR of the bars that indicate the events that are going to be recorded NOT the drop down box above.

Caution:

Always set the recording schedule to 7×24 and use the EVENT ARMING calendar to control when something will actually be detected, recorded and a push notification sent.

2.   Click on storage management to see the status of the SD Card. If it needs to be formatted it will indicate that, simply press the FORMAT button. The SD Card overwrites by default.

3.   Advanced properties allows you to control the pre-record and post record interval. When an event is detected in the example below, the camera will store the 5 seconds leading up to the event and 10 seconds after the event ends.

Step Eight: Add the Camera to the Mobile App

Now that you have set up your camera, it is time to add it to the ClareVision app. It is quite simple.

1. Launch the ClareVision App
   
2. Tap the ‘Plus’ sign and you will be presented with the three options shown below.
   
3. If you tap device is on the network, the app will scan the LAN for any ClareVision cameras and present them in the following screen. Device is on a remote network provides you with the option of scanning a QR code for a camera on a remote network.
   The system will locate it anywhere in the world and provide you with a login screen to add the remote camera.In our example, we tapped on “Device is on the local network” and two devices were found.
   
4. Tapping on a device brings you to a login screen where you may enter the credentials
   
5. And DONE!
   

You have just successfully installed, configured and enabled a stand alone ClareVision camera on the ClareVision mobile app. Any push notifications and events that are configured  will automatically propagate to your customer’s mobile device.

Getting Started with ClareVision – Standalone Camera Setup

The following is a getting started guide to for ClareVision cameras…it is the basics.

Overview

The following article provide the following information:

• The basic functions of an NVR
• The basic functions of an IP camera
• Best practices for setting up a stand alone camera

NVR’s

The NVR provides two basic functions: it network attaches the cameras and provides storage. In fact, the NVR does very little else.

• Network services: the NVR provides a central place to access IP cameras. You can attach IP cameras directly to the ports of the NVR or leave the cameras on the LAN. The NVR can be configured attach to those cameras for purposes of centralized access and recording. Centralized access can be viewing on the web console or providing access to integrated solutions such as the ClareOne Panel or a home automation system such as Control4
• Recording services: the NVR also provides recording services. You may record full time video or motion events, smart events, alarm events or any combination.

Note:

The NVR does NOT create events. The camera creates all events and the NVR simply records them. Why are the settings in the NVR for motion events, smart events and alarm events? Convenience. The NVR is simply configuring the camera so you do not have to log into each camera to configure an event. Check it out: configure an event in the NVR and log into the camera. You will see the exact settings you configured in the NVR in the camera settings web console.

Tip:

Since many ClareVision cameras come with SD cards installed, when should I use an NVR?

• Full time recording: the SD Cards are not useful for full time recording. A 4MP camera will overwrite in less than one day on full time record
• Storing multiple event types: the camera will store motion OR smart events OR alarm events. Use the NVR if you need multiple event types stored
• Camera count: if you are getting above 2 to 3 cameras, it is probably time for an NVR. Centralized access and storage flexibility will be very useful in those use cases.

IP Cameras

The IP camera is where almost everything interesting happens. The IP camera collects, analyzes and forwards video streams and snapshots to one or more clients. The camera can provide service to a mobile app, the NVR and an integrated control system simultaneously. It also provides multiple streams of video in different resolutions and frame rates so the client device can select the stream it can process. The following provides a high level reference highlighting the differences between the Value Series and Performance Series ClareVision IP cameras:

In summary, the camera is where everything interesting happens. The NVR simply provides convenient access and storage.

Setup a Stand-Alone ClareVision Camera, Connect to ClareVision Mobile

What You Need

Learning by doing is far better than reading articles and watching videos. Before you proceed, you will need the following:

• ClareVision IP camera: we will use a Performance series camera in our exercises.
• A computer with internet access
• A mobile phone with ClareVision installed. (Do not install ClareVision Plus – that is our legacy app)
• A PoE switch or a standard ethernet switch with a stand alone PoE injector.

Step One: Install the Camera on Your LAN

The following image shows the connection scheme for a PoE switch connected to a camera.

Tip:

If you are using a PoE switch, most switches have two LED’s on them: power and link. The power LED indicates the switch is powering the camera and the link light indicates data is being transmitted to the camera. Both of these LED’s should be lit. The link light will often flash.

If your link light is flashing on the ethernet switch and the power LED is lit – you have powered up the camera. Success!

Step Two: Find the Camera on Your LAN

All Clarevision cameras ship with DHCP turned on. DHCP simply means the router will assign an IP address to the camera when it boots up using the LAN IP address scheme. Example:

• Router IP Address: 192.168.1.1 (typical)
• IP address range that may be available: 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.255
• Router will assign an address like this: 192.168.1.x, where x can be any number between 2 and 255.

Tip:

While you can simply launch the mobile app, discover the camera and configure the password change, we DO NOT recommend this as a best practice. Many configuration parameters and all Smart Events are configurable from the web console only. Take the time to tune the camera to the installation, it will pay dividends in customer satisfaction!

Install and Launch IP Search and select “Search”

All IP cameras and NVR’s regardless of their IP address will appear in the results window.

Next launch a web browser (Chrome or Edge) and enter the IP address of the camera you just installed.

The default USERID is: admin (not case sensitive)

Here’s the good news. You likely will not have to adjust any video settings. We have configured those to allow for seamless integration into the ClareOne system and third party control systems.

Tip:

We have configured the encoder for H.264 encoding on all streams. You may want to encode the main stream (stream 1) using H.265 as it requires about 50% of the network bandwidth and 50% of the HDD storage space vs. H.264. We set the main stream to H.264 because certain control systems and mobile phones do not decode H.265. You can tune this to your application.

You likely will not touch any image settings except image rotation. Clare put a lot of time into optimizing all settings. We believe you will agree when you see the image quality!

That’s it! You are done with video and image settings!

Step Five: Configure Events

Events are the heart of the intelligent camera. All configuration is found under the Configuration Tab/Events. Events are broken into two categories: motion and smart. (V200 only).

The standard configuration for events from the factory is as follows:

• Motion detection: enabled, full field (entire field of view)
• Motion sensitivity: 5 (medium) – will detect a human about xx feet for Value Series and yy for Performance Series
• Motion record calendar: 7×24
• Motion event arm calendar: 7×24
• Motion record: main stream (except V100 4mp, which is set to sub-stream)
• Smart event: disabled

1.   Determine whether you want to use Smart Events or Motion Events:

• 1. Smart Events: detects human objects only and is quite accurate. Use this when other objects, like vehicles are not required. Smart events include intrusion zone, line cross detection, loitering and people gathering. False positives with Smart Events are very rare.
  2. Motion Events: detects motion of any kind (human, package, vehicle, animal)

Tip:

When using the camera stand alone, do not set up more than one event type (motion, smart). It is the event arming action that sends the event to the push notification server and the recording engine inside the camera. The camera will only record ONE event type (motion OR smart). If you arm both, you will get both event types sent to the user as push notifications but only one will record. The user could then receive a push notification for which there is no recording.

Step Six: Configure Storage

While you may store events locally to the SD Card and to an NVR at the same time, in this example, we will discuss the SD Card storage only.

1.   Go to Configuration/Storage/Recording Schedule

Set the storage schedule and event type you wish to store

Tip:

It is the COLOR of the bars that indicate the events that are going to be recorded NOT the drop down box above.

Caution:

Always set the recording schedule to 7×24 and use the EVENT ARMING calendar to control when something will actually be detected, recorded and a push notification sent.

2.   Click on storage management to see the status of the SD Card. If it needs to be formatted it will indicate that, simply press the FORMAT button. The SD Card overwrites by default.

3.   Advanced properties allows you to control the pre-record and post record interval. When an event is detected in the example below, the camera will store the 5 seconds leading up to the event and 10 seconds after the event ends.

You have just professionally configured a ClareVision camera! 

Step Six: Add the Camera to the Mobile App

Now that you have set up your camera, it is time to add it to the ClareVision app. It is quite simple.

Launch the ClareVision App

Tap the ‘Plus’ sign and you will be presented with the three options shown below.

If you tap device is on the network, the app will scan the LAN for any ClareVision cameras and present them in the following screen. Device is on a remote network provides you with the option of scanning a QR code for a camera on a remote network. The system will locate it anywhere in the world and provide you with a login screen to add the remote camera.

In our example, we tapped on “Device is on the local network” and two devices were found.

Tapping on a device brings you to a login screen where you may enter the credentials

And DONE!

You have just successfully installed, configured and enabled a stand alone ClareVision camera on the ClareVision mobile app. Push notifications and events as configured will automatically propagate to your customer’s mobile device!

Configuring Motion Events in a ClareVision Camera

The following a is a quick guide to setting up motion events in a ClareVision camera.

Motion events are quite simple to set up.

Step One: Go to the configuration tab, Events/Motion Events

Step Two: Set the motion area.

Set the motion area by dragging your mouse over the grid pattern. The area without grid coverage will not be analyzed for motion. In the image above, the pool surface should be removed from the motion detection area as the spa spillway will create rippling on the surface of the pool which will result in false triggers.

You should also watch for nearby bushes/trees/foliage that may move when the wind is blowing. The motion algorithm in the ClareVision cameras was overhauled in the fall release. As a result, insects, birds and foliage in the distance will rarely cause false triggers.

Step Three: Tune the Sensitivity.

As you lower the sensitivity, the likelihood of false triggers will be reduced, but the camera’s detection zone for a human size object will also be reduced. See the table below:

Note:  the above table is for human sized objects and the fixed lens cameras.  Cars, for example, will trigger motion events at greater distances and zoom adjustment on a varifocal camera will allow you to detect human objects at greater distances than those listed above.

Step Four: Set the arming schedule.

The arming schedule is what controls when the camera will process motion events. When a motion event is created, it is automatically sent to the push server (stand alone) or sent to the NVR for processing. Additionally, when a motion event is created, it will be sent to the recording engine in the camera and if configured to record, it will be recorded to the SD Card.

The arming schedule default is 7×24.

Caution:

It is easy to get confused by the multiple calendars that are in a camera or NVR. The event arming schedule shown above is the primary calendar you need to manage.

If your installation requires events to be disabled during certain hours of the day or days of the week ALWAYS do the following:

1. Use the event arming schedule to control when the event will be analyzed and propagated

2. Leave the record schedule on 7×24 record. DO NOT try to match the two calendars – use the event arm schedule to control when events happen NOT the record schedule.

Step Five: TEST

This is an easy thing to skip – make sure you test your setup! Watch the area of interest and make sure objects moving in that area are captured (go to the Playback tab to view). Equally as important, make sure you have filtered out areas that are prone to create false triggers: nearby foliage, pools, sidewalks, roadways etc.

Configuring Smart Events in Standalone Performance Series ClareVision Cameras

The following a is a quick guide to setting up Smart Events in standalone Performance Series ClareVision cameras.

Step One: Go to the configuration tab, Events/Smart Events

Make sure you ENABLE Intelligent Detection such as Humanoid detection. You must have Intelligent detection enabled to use any of the presents below.

There are four smart event types:

• Intrusion: intrusion events are boundary intrusion events. Intrusion detection can be configured with up to four zones.
• Line Crossing: line crossing detection can be configured as a unidirectional crossing or bidirectional crossing.
• Loiter Detection: detects when people stay in a region of interest for an certain time period.
• People Gather: detects when the density of people in an area exceeds a threshold.

All of these events are human based. Vehicle detection is being worked on at this time and will be in a future firmware release.

Although there are four smart event types, they all are stored and propagated to the mobile app as ‘Smart Events’. There is meta-data that indicates the smart event type in the event log in the mobile app and in the push notification. You can configure more than one smart event type.

Step Two: Intrusion

Intrusion is the most commonly used smart event type. It is similar to motion detection in concept but is restricted to human detection. False positives are very rare with smart intrusion events.

First – check the ‘enable’ box. Without the event enabled, nothing will happen.

Click “Draw Area”. You can draw a quadrilateral anywhere on the screen. If the region of interest does not fit nicely within a quadrilateral, you can draw a second quadrilateral by using the “Warn Region” dropdown box. You can have up to four regions of interest.

Any intrusion in any of the up to four regions will trigger the intrusion event.

The “Time Threshold” is the duration the person needs to be in the region for the event to trigger. The time is in seconds.

“Sensitivity” is the human detection sensitivity setting. A higher number will detect humans further away from the camera, but may be prone to more false detections. Lower sensitivity has the reverse effect.

Step 3: Line Crossing

Line crossing is used when you want to know when someone has entered or exited a specific threshold or doorway as opposed to simply knowing if someone is in a region

In this example, the camera will trigger when someone walks from the house to the pool, but not the reverse.

Step Four: set the arming schedule.

The arming schedule is what controls when the camera will process smart events. Each smart event type can have its own arming schedule. When a smart event is created, it is automatically sent to the push server (stand alone) or sent to the NVR for processing. Additionally, when a motion event is created, it will be sent to the recording engine in the camera and if configured to record, it will be recorded to the SD Card.

Where to find the default password for ClareVision Cameras and NVRs

The default password for all ClareVision cameras and NVRs is the FIRST SIX CHARACTERS of the UUID which can be found on:

• Back of the installation manual
• Label on the camera box
• Label on the back of the physical camera

IMPORTANT NOTE: The password is case sensitive.

You will be prompted to change the password when initially setting up the camera in both the camera web console and ClareVision App.

How to use the SD Card in a ClareVision Camera as Backup to Your NVR.

Want to be sure events are available for your customer in the event of an NVR failure or NVR theft? Use the SD Card on the Camera as a backup.

Overview

The SD Card in the camera (included in all 4MP and 2MP fixed lens ClareVision cameras) is a useful tool when you want to install one or two cameras and keep the job low cost and simple.  The user experience is similar to an NVR with event playback and the storage is reliable.  What about an installation with an NVR?  Use the SD Card as a back up for events.

NVR Setup

The NVR setup is not changed in any way to accomplish the goal of using the SD Card as a backup for events.  Read this article to learn more about setting up a ClareVision NVR.  Once you have completed setting up the NVR to record motion or smart events, you are ready to configure the camera to record events.

Camera Setup

By setting up the NVR to record events in the motion or smart event setup, you have already configured the camera’s motion or smart events.

Here is the NVR with smart events configured using Intrusion Detection

By configuring the Intrusion Detection in the NVR as above, the camera Intrusion Detection is configured as shown below (the NVR simply ‘programs’ the camera)

The recording schedule you setup in the NVR is the recording schedule for the NVR, not the camera.  To use the camera SD card as a backup to the NVR for events, we need to set the recording schedule up in the camera.

The image below shows the camera recording schedule.  It is set to record all Smart Events, 7 days/week, 24 hours/day.

Save the schedule and you are done.  The camera will both, send the event to the NVR for storage and record the event locally.

Points to Remember:

1. You cannot access SD Card events from the mobile app when it is behind an NVR (i.e. on the PoE ports).  If the camera is connected to the NVR on the general network, you can add the camera to the mobile app as a separate device and access the events directly from the camera tile on the home page.  We only recommend doing this for troubleshooting and access to SD Card events as it will get confusing for your customer if the camera is visible on the home page and the NVR screen.
2. You can only back up ONE event type: motion OR smart and not both.  The camera will only record a single event type.
3. Accessing the stored events on the camera itself involves the following steps assuming the camera is on an NVR PoE port:
   1. Log into the NVR
   2. Go to Configuration/Channel/Camera
      
   3. Access the virtual host by clicking on the IP address of the camera you wish to view and login to the camera.
   4. Once logged into the camera, go to the Playback tab and view the stored events.

Conclusion

Clare Controls includes SD cards on many of its cameras standard.  You can use the camera stand-alone OR use the SD card as a backup to the NVR.  With a few minutes of work, you can assure you customer their data is safe!

Where do I find the UUID on an Installed Camera

If you camera is already installed and you need the UUID for setup – follow these instructions.

Let’s say you are being called out to configure cameras that have already been installed and no one wrote down the UUID you need for the password. There are two simple methods for retrieving the UUID without getting a ladder out and going to each camera

Method 1: Cameras are Stand-Alone on the LAN

Launch the ClareVision App

Tap the ‘Plus’ sign and you will be presented with the three options shown below.

If you tap device is on the network, the app will scan the LAN for any ClareVision cameras and present them in the following screen.

There you have all ClareVision cameras attached to the LAN with the UUID (needed for the default password) and the IP address of the camera. You can now log into the camera your browser using the IP address and the first 6 digits of the UUID as the default password.

Method 2: Cameras are on the NVR

This is even easier. Log into the NVR, change the password as requested. When you do so, all attached cameras will have their UserID and password set automatically to the UserID and password of the NVR.

If you want to change the UserID and password of the NVR, you do so under the Configuration tab System/Users

Check the “Sync Camera Password” box and password will change on all attached ClareVision cameras whether on the PoE ports or the general LAN when the NVR password change is accepted.

Note:

The camera password sync feature works with ClareVision cameras only. It does not work with attached ONVIF cameras (e.g. Luma, Hikvision etc)

How to set up Event Snapshots using cloud storage for ClareVision cameras and NVRs

Event snapshots can be configured for ClareVision cameras and NVRs that are backed up on a Google Drive account. Whenever an event is detected such as smart event, motion, or other alarm trigger, a snapshot image will be created of the scene and uploaded to your Cloud storage device. This guide will help you set up Google Drive for use as a backup with event snapshots.

Google Drive:

1. Utilize IP Search Tool to find your camera on the network and notate the IP address.
2. Open Edge or Chrome and navigate to the IP address for your camera.
   • (ex. http://10.100.0.100)
3. Log into the camera using camera’s credentials that you created at setup.
4. Click on the “Configuration” tab, then click on “Storage” in the navigation tree on the left side of the page.
   
5. Click on the “Storage Management” sub-menu and switch to the “Cloud Storage” tab.
6. From the drop-down menu in a camera, select “Google” or the “Enable” checkbox and “Google” checkbox on an NVR. The web console will auto-fill with the Web setup URL and Authentication Code. You will need this code to complete setup.
   
7. Copy and past the web browser URL link (https://www.google.com/device) into a new browser tab.
8. Copy and paste the Authentication code into the Google devices login window and tap “Next“.
   
9. Log in or select your Google Drive account.
10. Tap “Allow” to give the NVR rights to your Google Drive.
    
11. After the success screen displays, switch back to the camera web console and tap “Bind“.
    
12. The camera is now be connected with your Google Drive account. You must enable Cloud Snapshot Backup individually for each camera including those connected to an NVR by opening the camera through the Virtual Host. Configure the Cloud Linkage method in your motion detection settings:
13. Open the “Events” window in the sub-menu and select “Ordinary Events or Smart Events“, depending on the need.
14. Under your selected event type, select “Linkage Method” in the sub-menu.
15. Add a check box next to “Upload Via Cloud” to have event snapshots loaded into the cloud.
    
16. Tab “Save“.
17. The next time motion is detected, a folder will be created in your Google Drive that will capture and upload snapshots of motion events.

How to Access Device from Web 2M DVRs

When devices are connected to the network, they can also be accessible from a computer. The first thing you need to make sure of is that the computer you are using and the DVR/NVR are connected to the same network (network is coming from the same router for both devices). You will first need to obtain the IP address of the DVR/NVR from Menu → System → Network → IPv4 address.

After noting the IP address of your device, open Internet Explorer and in the address search bar type in the DVR/NVR IP address. If the NVR and the computer are on the same network then it will pull up the login page of the DVR/NVR. The credentials will be the same as when you log into the local interface of your device.

How to Find the Serial Number Using 2M Tool

2M Tool is used to find the IP address of your 2M NVR, DVR, or IP camera, as well as limited management of its settings. You only need to make sure that the computer you are using 2M Tool on is connected to the same network as the device that you are trying to search for.

Why do we need the serial number? The serial number is mainly used in case of a customer needing a password reset on their device.

How do we find the serial number? There are a few ways to find the number:

• sticker on the device
• sticker on the box that the device came in
• web page client of the device
• using 2M Tool

In the case that you forget the password for you device in which you will not be able to access the web page, and the camera is too high up to reach to find the sticker, you can use 2M Tool to find the serial number. 2M Tool does not automatically show the number; you must force it to show. First, you will need to click on the Settings icon to show the options:

Then another window will open where you can select Serial Number to show.

Once you hit OK, the serial number will then appear.

How to Install Plugin for Internet Explorer

This article features screenshots from our 2MN-8XXX series NVR and our 2MT-4XXX series DVR, but the same principle will apply to any other recorder. This is because each recorder requires a plugin in order to view the cameras on the web page. You will have to manually install the plugin, but it is usually always provided as a link for easy access.

First, you must make sure that you are using Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is the only browser that can support these plugins. It is possible for some devices to be viewed on Google Chrome or even Firefox, but then other functions are very limited so it is highly not recommended to use those browsers. Once Internet Explorer is open, and you navigate to the device’s web page by entering the IP address, there should be a link shown on the page. You can see on the picture below that the link is located on the top of the page.

When you click on the link, a pop-up will appear on the bottom of the page that will let you choose whether to Run the program or Save the program onto your computer. Note: Running the program will not save it. If you wish to save the program, please select Save. Once it has finished downloading, then you can run the program from the file location.

If you choose to Run the program, an error message will appear noting that the publisher couldn’t be verified. This is no issue; the plugin will not cause any harm to your computer. Hit Run, and run the installation. Some installations will require you to close out of Internet Explorer in order to complete the setup.

Once the setup is complete, refresh the page, and another message will pop-up on the bottom that asks you to Allow the add-on to run. Select Allow, and log into the page. Now you should be able to view your cameras on the web page.

How to Set Up 2M Guard

2M Guard is the phone app that we use for our NVR’s to view cameras from our phones offsite.

This app only works for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

1. Find the Register Code and/or QR Code for your DVR/NVR

• on NVR menu: Menu → System → Network → P2P OR Menu → Network → P2P
• on web menu: Setup → Network → P2P

2. Two ways to add a device onto the app:

1. Star4Live
2. directly on the app

Method 1: Adding Device Through Star4Live

• Go to https://www.star4live.com/login
• Click on Login if you already have an existing account or Sign Up if you do not

• Once you have logged in, click on Add and another window will pop up prompting for a Device Name and Register Code. Once all of the required information has been filled out, hit OK and your device should show up under My Cloud Devices.

• Once you have successfully added the device on Star4Live, open the app and log into your account using the same credentials that you created/used on star4live.com
• Go to Live View and tap the icon in the upper right corner to select a device
• Select the device you would like to view
• Start live view

Method 2: Adding Device Directly on the App

• When you first download the app it will prompt you to either Sign Up or Login
• Tap on Login if you already have an existing account or Sign Up if you do not

• Open up the app menu and go to Devices. This section shows all of the devices that have been added onto your account. To add another one, tap on Add at the top of the screen.

• You can choose to add the device by scanning the QR code or by manually inputting the Register Code. To move forward with either of these options, you will need to tap on Scan

• A screen will appear for you to scan a QR code. If you choose to scan this is where you will do it, but if you choose to manually enter the Register Code, tap on the edit icon on the bottom.

• Once all of the correct information has been filled out, hit the Save icon in the upper right corner.
• In order to see the cameras, open the app menu and tap on Live View
• At first, it will look blank. This is because we need to add the cameras to the windows. Tap on the Add icon in the upper right corner

• A list of your devices will appear. Select the one that you want to view and hit Start Live View on the bottom

• Now you can view your cameras on the go!

How to Set Up 2M Station

When first running the program, it will prompt you for a username and password which will be admin/123456 by default. It is recommended that you change the password after installation.

Once you are logged in it will show the menu. Click on Device Management to add any devices. On the left side make sure that Encoding Device is selected. It will show at the bottom of the screen any devices that are online as long as the computer is on the same network as the devices.

There are two methods to add an online device. The first method is fairly simple. All you need to do is check the box for the NVR that shows under Online Device and then click Add. The second method to adding an online device is to manually add it. First click on Add next to Managed Device, and it will open another window where you can input the details of your device. It will ask for:

• Device Name → can be any name for your device
• IP/Domain → local or public IP address of NVR
• Port → port number of NVR
• Username → username of NVR
• Password → password of NVR

After putting in all of the correct information of your device, click on Add and then the device should come online.

Another method to add a device is by using the P2P method which allows for a user to view their cameras offsite from any location. The device will be added as a Cloud Device instead of an Encoding Device.

It will show Login and Register buttons that will link to your Star4Live account which will show the devices you have previously added. After logging in, it will take a minute or two for the devices to show online. At first, it will say Offline (Connecting…), but eventually the status will show Online.

After successfully adding all of your devices, go back to the menu and click on Live View to view your cameras. A list of online devices will show on the left side of the window. Click and drag the device into the window view in order to load all of the video. If not all of the cameras are wanted in view, you can click on the plus sign next to your device and it will show a list of cameras connected to the NVR. You can click and drag specific cameras onto the live view screen.

How to Set Up Email Notifications Using Gmail

Gmail will have automatic security settings that need to be disabled before configuring email settings in the NVR. You will need a computer in order to edit these settings. First, log on to your Gmail account and then click on the square icon in the upper right corner of the page. Click on Account.

Security → Scroll to the bottom until you find “Less secure app access” → “Allow less secure apps: ON”

Now that Gmail has been set to allow app access, we can move on to the NVR settings. These can either be configured through the web page or through the NVR itself.

Through the DVR/NVR: Main Menu → Network → Basic → Email

Through the webpage: Setup → Network → Email

• Server Authentication: On
• Username: email that you will be sending from (can be a throwaway email)
• Password: password of email account
• SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
• SMTP port: 465
• Enable TLS/SSL
• Can choose to attach image or not
• Sender: sender name
• Sender’s address: email address (same as username)
• Recipient: any recipient name
• Recipient address: email address of recipient
• Test email

After you finish entering all of the settings and the test is successful go to Camera → Motion → Select Camera → Trigger Actions → Send Email

How to Share a Device

Each NVR can only be added by one account at a time, so if one wants to add a device onto multiple accounts they would need to share the device with one account being the “main” account. This means that one person will have the device added to their account and that person will share the device with other people. Each person still must have their own Star4Live account.

How to share the device is simple. First, you will need to log onto the main Star4Live account which the NVR has been added to. It can be done either through the computer or your personal phone.

Sharing from Computer: after logging into the account your list of added devices will appear. Click Share on the row for the device you are wanting to share.

Then a menu will appear to enter the account you want to share to, the Valid Till date, User Rights, and any Description you want to give.

• Share To → can either be the username or the email of the Star4Live account you are sharing to
• Valid Until → can go up to X amount of years, months, or just a few days
• Permission → can choose any user rights that have already been configured on the NVR (admin, etc.)
• Remarks → can give a short description to the recipient about the device that is being shared

Once all of the information has been correctly filled out, click Confirm to successfully share.

Sharing from 2M Guard Phone App: after logging into your Star4Live account on the 2M Guard app, go to your Devices and then tap on the device that you want to share. A small menu will appear. Then tap Share on the bottom of the screen.

The next window will show the device and a list of the cameras that are connected and online. You can choose specific cameras, or select the device so that the entirety of its cameras are selected for sharing.

Once your device(s) has been selected, the Share menu will finally appear. The app will ask for the same information as the computer does, but it will not give a space to fill out a description. Fill out the Share To and the Valid Period the same as you would do on the desktop instructions written above. The only other difference between the Star4Live browser and the app is the sharing Type: you will be able to choose between Role or Function.

• Role: can choose a specific user or role to share to another user
• Function: can choose specific functions to share to another user with Live View being automatically selected by default

NOTE: Only admin rights will allow another user to access the device through the web browser or through 2M Station because they both allow a user to make changes to the device. If you do not wish for another user to be able to make any kind of changes (viewing only), please choose the By Function type.

Once one of these methods have been completed to share the device, the recipient only needs to log into their Star4Live account and the shared NVR should show automatically under their own device list.

How to Sign Up for Star4Live Account

Star4Live is the server that we use to view NVR and camera footage over the web. Each customer needs to have an account to view and manage their devices.

This is only valid for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-2008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

• Go on https://www.star4live.com/login
• Click on Sign Up

• Clicking on this link will direct you to a new page that will prompt you to fill out information in order to create an account
  1. Username
  2. Email → Acquire: will send a code to the email entered
  3. Verification Code: code that was sent to email. NOTE: If you have not received anything in your inbox, please also check the Spam folder.
  4. Password
  5. Confirm Password
  6. Service Agreement

• Once all the information has been correctly filled out, click Register and your account will be ready to use.

How to Upgrade the Firmware

Every now and again, we will release a new firmware update that can either hold new features for your unit, bug fixes, or a bit of both. We have made it simple to request the newest firmware so that there is no need to wait for a file to be sent. First, you will need to make sure that your device is connected to the internet so that the NVR will be able to communicate with our servers.

Method 1: From the NVR Interface

Then you will go into the Main Menu and click on Maintain. There will be a section for Upgrade.

There are two options for upgrading:

1. Local Upgrade: this option is only good if you already have the firmware file loaded onto either a USB to plug directly into the device or if you already have the firmware file in a location on the computer which you are using to upgrade the device
2. Cloud Upgrade: this option is good if you do not already have the file on hand. It will automatically read the current version and detect if there is a newer version available

You will most likely want to choose the Cloud Upgrade option unless you have received the firmware file from Tech Support beforehand. Click Cloud Upgrade, and wait for the device to finish its search. It will either notify you that the current version is already the latest, or it will show a newer version, and the Upgrade button will highlight at the bottom of the screen.

The upgrade time will vary between 1-5 minutes, sometimes lasting longer depending on the size of the update. Once the update has finished, the device will automatically restart. It will be ready to use again once it has fully finished the reboot.

Note: Please make sure that the device does not disconnect from the network or from power because it can cause a risk in damaging the unit if there is a failed update.

Method 2: From the Web Interface

The NVR can be updated from its web page if there is no monitor connected to the unit, or if it cannot be physically accessed. From the web page, you will navigate to Setup → Maintenance → Maintenance → Cloud Upgrade → Detect or Check for Update. The process is the same as it is from the unit itself, and the same rules will apply.

How to Use Star4Live

Star4Live is the server that we use to view NVR and camera footage over the web. Each customer needs to have an account to view and manage their devices. You must use Internet Explorer in order to access all of the functions of Star4Live.

This is only valid for models: 2MT-4004, 2MT-4008, 2MT-4088, 2MT-4016, 2MN-8004-P4, 2MN-8008-P8, 2MN-8116-P16, 2MN-8232-P16 and our IP cameras.

• Using Internet Explorer, please go to https://www.star4live.com/login
• Login if you already have an existing account or Sign Up if you do not
• If you are using this site for the first time on a device, please make sure to install the P2P plugin. The website will show you a prompt at the top of the screen. Make sure to allow pop-ups on your browser because clicking on the link will open up a new window

• When you log into Star4Live, the first page that shows is the Device Management tab which will show My Cloud Devices. Here is where you can see the devices that have been added to your account, or any devices that have been shared with you under Devices Shared To Me

• In order to access a device’s web page, click on the Access icon

• If the P2P plugin has been installed, the NVR web page will display automatically when you access your device. If not, you will get an error that your device “Cannot be reached.”
• Once the web page has finished loading up, you will need to install another plugin to view the cameras’ live feed.
• After it has been installed there will be a pop-up on the bottom of the screen that will ask permission to allow the plugin to run. You will need to allow this.
