Required. You need Org Admin and/or Site Admin permissions for your Verkada Command organization to complete these actions.

What you need

Create a site

Sites are the logical way of grouping and managing devices within your Command organization. Site-level permissions make managing and viewing your devices easier. See Manage Your Sites and Subsites for more information on site creation and management.

Add an intercom

At least one intercom needs to be added to Command before you can see the Intercom tab in the All Products menu. Intercoms can be added to Command from the Devices page. See Add an Intercom to Your Site for more information.

Connect a door

You can pair an existing access-controlled door or wire a door to the intercom that can be unlocked by an intercom receiver. See Configure a TD52 and Wire a TD52 Video Intercom for more information.

Configure receivers

Receivers allow you to answer calls from an intercom and unlock any associated doors. See Add and Configure Receivers in Intercom for more information.

Licensing

Every intercom you manage in Command will need a license. Verkada licensing is applied for each Command organization, and the licenses co-term to a single expiration date. Your licenses may have been automatically added if you claimed your devices via order number. Otherwise, manually add the licenses from the Admin page. See Manage Your Licenses for more information on adding and managing licenses.

Connect your intercom

Recommendation. While Verkada intercoms are considered low-voltage devices that do not require a certified electrician to install, we strongly recommend you work with a system integrator or other professional for installation.

Please refer to the intercom setup guide for instructions on mounting and wiring the door port.

Power and network

Verkada intercoms use Power over Ethernet (PoE) for power and communication over the LAN. In most cases, intercoms will connect directly to an 802.3af PoE standard switch. PoE injectors can be used when a PoE switch is not available. See the intercom’s datasheet for more information.

Check network settings

Verkada intercoms are designed to be plug-and-play. However, if your environment includes a firewall with custom rules and policies, you may need to make some configuration changes to get your access controllers connected to the cloud. See Intercom Network Settings for more information.

Verkada intercoms setup guide v1

Verkada Intercom permissions determine who can receive calls, view intercom video, and unlock intercom doors. Intercom permissions depend on your site-level permissions, and whether you’re configured as a Receiver.

At a high level, these are the permissions granted to each level of Intercom devices:

Site-level roles

Required. You must be configured as a receiver to receive calls.

If you’re a Verkada Intercom Receiver, you have the baseline receiver permissions (as shown above). These baseline Receiver permissions combine with site-level permissions to determine overall intercom permissions within a certain site.

For example, if you’re a Receiver for a particular intercom, and a Site Viewer, you get all the Receiver permissions, in addition to the ability to view historical video and events.

Note: Receivers, such as Desk Stations and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) phones are not tied to a Verkada Command user. This means that the user can only get Receiver permissions, regardless of the user’s site-level permissions.

This article outlines the required network settings that your Verkada Intercom needs to communicate with Verkada Command. For more information on the required network settings for other Verkada product lines see Required Network Settings.

Note: Verkada devices are incompatible with LANs that require proxy servers or Secure Socket Layer (SSL)/Transport Layer Security (TLS) inspection. If either is in use, a bypass for all Verkada devices must be implemented for Verkada devices to communicate with Verkada Command.

Status LED

A flashing blue status LED on the top of the intercom indicates the intercom is not communicating with Command. If you see this behavior, check that the network is set up correctly with the intercom’s requirements. If the problem persists, contact Verkada Support.

IP address

Intercoms must be assigned an IPv4 address to communicate on the LAN and to Verkada Command. Intercoms use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) to obtain their IP addresses and network configurations.

If you require your intercom to have a specific IP address, create a DHCP reservation using the device’s Media Access Control (MAC) address (found on the device’s label).

Domain Name System

Intercoms use the DNS server to resolve Verkada’s fully qualified domain names (FQDN) to IP addresses to communicate with them. Your DHCP server tells the intercom where the DNS server is on the network and the intercom communicates using UDP port 53.

Note: DNS over HTTPS (DoH) is currently not supported.

Power

Intercoms are powered through Power over Ethernet (PoE). This means the network switch needs to provide power to the intercom, or a PoE injector needs to be utilized. For specifics on power requirements, see the Intercom datasheet.

Firewall settings

Intercoms require access to many endpoints to ensure they can communicate with Command and all features will be accessible. Many customers may want to allow the intercoms to communicate with the general required endpoints.

Learn how to mount the Verkada TD52 Video Intercom

Use this article to learn how to mount a Verkada Intercom (TD52). Once you complete the mounting, you can connect the TD52 to the network.

Before you begin

You can mount the TD52 using a flush mount or using a mounting bracket. We recommend that you verify the contents of your box and make sure you have the tools you need

Whichever mounting option you choose, you should remove the front cover of the TD52 to access the screw holes that allow you to install on a mount.

Use a flush mount

The TD52 comes with a flush mount in the box. You can use the screw holes of the flush mount to mount the Intercom (see image below for visual):

You can use the mounting bracket to install the TD52 on to various surfaces that the flush mount plate cannot, where they’re typically used to mount the TD52 on an exterior surface.

How To Setup a Security Camera System?

The first phase in setup of a security camera system consists of installing the cameras and running the wire. The second phase is completing the connections between the cameras and the recorder, which depends on the type of camera system you have purchased.

How To Setup a DVR Camera System

DVR camera systems consist of security cameras that have BNC jacks to send video over coax wire, and a 12VDC power connector for power. Such coax wire based systems use RG59U siamese cables that have BNC and 12VDC power connectors at each end, which allow video and power to be run together over one “siamese cable.” As shown in the setup video below, BNC connectors are silver colored metal connectors that twist lock on to the video jacks of a camera and DVR recorder.

Infrequently, an installer may use network cabling with video baluns instead of coax cabling, which was very common with older CCTV systems to transmit video signal over long distances. Regardless of whether you are using coax wire or video baluns, setup of a DVR camera system is similar as demonstrated in the following video:

How To Setup a NVR Camera System

NVR camera systems use plug-and-play IP Cameras that connect directly to built-in PoE ports on the back of the NVR. Such systems are also commonly referred to as PoE IP camera systems because the cameras use Power over Ethernet technology to send power/video/data all over one network cable. We recommend using CAT5e cable as a minimum, and CAT6 wire is recommended for runs longer than 150ft as its thicker wire gauge allows for improved power transmission.

Our IP camera systems feature plug-and-play compatibility between the NVR and IP camera. Unless otherwise specified, we ensure the cameras and NVR we sell are compatible with each other and allow even a novice user to setup a IP security camera system.

To gain a good understanding of your purchase, we recommend customers bench test IP cameras with the NVR recorder before installing the cameras. Once it is established that all cameras are operational, continue with mounting the cameras at the desired location and running the camera wire. Since installation errors are common when crimping CAT5e or CAT6 network cable, we recommend using a cable continuity tester to safeguard against wiring related issues.

Once cameras are installed and wired to the digital video recorder it is time to login, and start using the system, which leads us to the third phase

How to use your surveillance system

1. How To Login to a Security Camera System

Before you are able to login to your camera system over the web, you need to login at the DVR or NVR itself using a mouse. Connect the recorder to a monitor that supports at least 1080P resolution. We recommend using a HDMI input capable monitor. Turn on the recorder and login using two possible login methods.

In case you are unable to login due to a forgotten password, it is easy and secure to reset the password and gain entry into the unit. It is required that you be present at the recorder when following the video guide below on how to reset the login password. As shown in the video below, by answering some simple security questions you can quickly reset the login password.

2. Viewing Live Video and Audio on a Security System

All of our DVR Systems and HD NVR systems allow multiple viewing options. You can view multiple cameras in a grid-view or view one camera at a time in full screen mode. Full screen mode also allows the user to listen to audio from security cameras with built-in microphone. To hear audio from cameras, all of the following conditions must be met:

It is important to understand the difference between digital zoom and optical zoom, and the fact that optical zoom can only be used in live view mode. Below is a detailed video demonstration of each type of zoom function and how both can be utilized during live view to see objects far away. 3. Setting Recording Resolution

A common misconception about our camera systems is that all cameras have to be the same resolution, which is not the case. Cameras of different resolutions can be used on the same recorder in any of our systems, granted the cameras are within the maximum resolution limit of the recorder. This is true for systems consisting of Tribrid DVR, XVR, or NVR recorders.
Encoding settings can be set individually for each camera channel. Depending on the maximum recording resolution supported by the recorder and the camera, our surveillance recorders allow up to 12MP recordings. All of our DVR and NVR recorders also have dual video encoding technology to provide two streams of video for each camera channel:

4. Customizing Video Settings

We manufacture our cameras to produce the best possible picture quality automatically. Sometimes peculiar lighting scenarios in a scene may require customization. Our DVRs and NVRs allow multiple picture quality settings to be modified from the recorder as explained in the detailed video tutorial below. It is important to note that there is a difference in capabilities to modify image settings when comparing coax based cameras versus IP cameras.

Coax based cameras produce video that is encoded by the DVR, thus allowing picture quality to be modified before the video is saved by the DVR. In contrast, IP cameras encode video that is streamed to the NVR for saving the video stream; the video is not encoded by the NVR. Therefore, any changes made in the picture settings on the NVR must be communicated back to the IP security camera. If an incompatible IP camera is used with an NVR, such changes will not be communicated to the IP camera, and changes will not apply before video is encoded by the camera.

Our systems allow a wide variety of picture settings to be toggled depending on the camera specifications. In addition to picture brightness and contrast, the user can toggle image quality features such as backlighting, glare compensation (WDR), and image flip.

5. Recording Method Configuration

All of our security systems offer a variety of video recording methods. Each security camera can be set to record independently and the user has the option to choose from the following recording methods:

The digital video recorders in our systems even allow multiple recording methods for each camera. For example, cameras can be set to record all the time or during a portion of the day using the scheduled recording method, while also recording upon motion detection. This preserves video integrity in case a motion event is missed, and is very helpful when reviewing recorded security footage to allow the user to skip to points in the timeline when motion is detected. 6. Playback Recorded Video on your Surveillance System

Important Installation Guidelines

The optimal installation location, including the height and angle of your camera, will depend on the type of detection settings that you want to enable. Since the optimal angle for person and vehicle detection is different from the optimal angle for face detection, you will need to select one approach.

Note: You cannot enable both face detection and person and vehicle detection at the same time.

You now need to configure the NVR so that it’s ready to connect to your network. Don’t worry – this is simpler than it sounds. This initial setup is simplest when done on the local GUI, using a directly connected monitor. The following steps walk you through this initial setup process:

Note – Avoid plugging anything into the back of the NVR until instructed to do so in this tutorial.

Firstly, you’ll need to look at the back of your NVR and make sure you can identify the following parts that are needed for this stage:

[1] – PoE (Power over Ethernet) ports (Most Hikvision NVRs have PoE ports which will power any camera via the network cable. Those that do not will require you to connect the camera across remotely, using a separate PoE injector or switch for power.)

[2] – VGA display port
​

[3] – HDMI display port
​

[4] – USB port(s) (and mouse – one should come included with the NVR)
​

[5] – LAN port (and ethernet cable – Cat5e or Cat6 is fine)

[6] – Kettle power socket (the power lead is included with the NVR)​

Now, follow these steps. It is easier if you leave your cameras disconnected until prompted later in this guide:

Step 1:

Plug the kettle plug into the power inlet to connect the NVR to a power supply.​

Step 2:

Connect your NVR to a display (this can be any monitor or television) by connecting either an HDMI or VGA cable from the monitor to the corresponding port in the back of the NVR.​

Step 3:

Plug your USB mouse into one of the NVR’s USB ports.​

​

​

Step 4:

Use an ethernet cable to connect your NVR to your local network – Plug one end of the cable into the RJ45 ports into a network access point (such as an ethernet port on your router), and the other into the LAN port in the back of your NVR.​

​

​

​

Step 5:

Turn the NVR on and let it boot up. Ignore the beeping noise, it’s completely normal and just the NVR telling you that it isn’t properly configured yet.​

​

You may get a prompt to adjust the NVR’s resolution to match the connected display, click “yes” to view everything in the best resolution supported by your display.​

​

​

​

Step 6:

Set your language when prompted.​

​

​

​

Step 7:

Set a password for the NVR , as well as a “Channel Default Password”, which will be passed onto any inactive device that is directly connected to the NVR’s PoE ports. We recommend keeping these passwords the same for simplicity’s sake. It’s key that you set a password that the NVR defines as strong and that you remember this password, as resetting the passwords on Hikvision devices can be a hassle that you want to avoid, if possible.​

Step 8:

Now set a valid “reserved email” address for the NVR, which Hikvision will use for verification if you need to reset your password.​

​

Step 9:

Next, set an unlock pattern of your choice by using your mouse to draw any shape you like – you will be asked to do this twice to confirm the pattern. This will be used to quickly login to your NVR in the local GUI.​

​

​

Step 10:

Now, set your time zone, your preferred date format, and date/time.​

​

​

Step 11:

​

On the Network Setup page:​

​

Leave the “NIC Type” as it is.​

​

Either leave the “Enable Obtain DNS Server” box ticked, or untick it and use one these recommended public DNS servers.​

​

It is best to leave the “Enable DHCP” box unticked here. Instead, set the “IPv4 Address” of the NVR to an unused IP address on your network, which is within your gateway’s range. Your Gateway will typically be the IP address of your router. E.g. if your router’s IP address is “192.168.1.1”, you’ll want to give the NVR an IP address within the range of “192.168.1.x”, where “x” is any unused address between “2” and “254”.​

Note – DHCP can be left on during this stage of the setup to automatically assign your NVR an open IP address if you like, just be sure to turn it off again once your system up and running. To disable it again once set up, just go to: ​

System/Configuration→ Network → TCP/IP → DHCP Off → Apply​

Input the Subnet Mask of your network (typically it’s “255.255.255.0”) and “IPv4 Default Gateway”. If you’re unsure of these, see the below articles which explain how to check what they are and if a particular IP address is available:​

How-to: How do I find my router and Mac’s IP address using a Mac?​

The “Internal NIC IPv4 Address” can be left as it is, this just refers to the NVR’s own LAN address (so Plug and Play cameras will use IP addresses on this range).​

You can now stop the annoying bleeping! Select your hard drive(s) from the list and click “Init” to format it, and then “Next” when the formatting has completed.​

Note – This will completely wipe the drive, so please make sure that any that are being reused to not have data that you might need on them. ​

The next page is for the Camera Setup. As mentioned earlier, we recommend connecting any cameras after the NVR setup process has completed, so you can skip this page.​

You will now be taken to the platform access page. Again, skip through and leave this for now.​

Step 15:

Finally, you’ll be taken to the Change Password page and given the option to set a new admin password. Ignore this, unless you actually want to change your password. Remember, your admin password is different from your activation password, which you’ll need to use when activating individual cameras on your network.​

Click “Exit” and “Yes” on the “Exit Wizard” popup.​

That’s the initial setup of your NVR complete. You should now be taken to the NVR’s live view page (you won’t see your cameras until these are connected in Part 4), with your main navigation menu at the top of the screen.​

Use the provided T10 Security Torx security screwdriver to loosen the screws and lift the cover.

Insert the Ethernet cable into Ethernet port.

Connect the camera to an 802.3af/at Power over Ethernet port on your network. An orange LED on the camera’s Ethernet port will indicate that it is powered and booting up. A green LED on the Ethernet port will indicate the camera is active.

To seal the Ethernet cable, disassemble the cable gland and feed the Ethernet cable through the baseplate through-hole.

  1. Place the rubber seal around the cable. Push the plastic collar firmly over the rubber seal until it snaps into position.

• 

  2. Firmly insert the seal and collar assembly into the pass-through until it is secured in position.

• 

  3. Place the metal nut over the rubber seal and engage the threads on the pass-through.

• 

  4. Gently tighten down the metal nut by hand. You should still be able to move the cable back and forth through the gland, but have enough resistance for it to remain in place.

Gently pull the cable through the through-hole so it has some slack, but will not interfere with the top cover.

Firmly tighten using the provided Cable gland wrench.

Pulling the Ethernet cable too tight will strain the cable which may impact data performance.

Too much slack in the Ethernet cable may create top cover installation issues.

Mount

• Mount the camera on a wall or ceiling. Try to keep the camera 8 to 10 feet above the ground.
• For best night vision, avoid overhangs or obstructions. These may reflect the camera’s IR illumination and reduce the image clarity in night mode.
• Use the provided T10 security Torx security screwdriver to loosen the screws and lift the cover. To remove the mount plate, loosen the mount plate screws and twist the camera counter-clockwise. Lift the camera vertically off the base plate and set aside.
• Use the provided mounting template to mark wall mount holes. For a junction box mount, use the mounting template to determine the correct hole pattern.
• For a solid material like wood or metal, drill 1/8 inch pilot holes. Drive mounting screws directly into the pilot holes.
• For drywall, drill 1/4 inch holes. Insert plastic anchors into holes and drive mounting screws into anchors.
• To secure the camera, place it over the mount plate screws and twist counter-clockwise. Tighten the mount plate screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

Adjust

Adjust your camera to the desired viewing angle.

Use the online stream to confirm image orientation.

Image can be flipped 180˚ online in Command.

Default image orientation is indicated by markings on the lens face. Video orientation is also adjustable from within the Verkada application.

Secure

• 

  Open and remove the desiccant pack from its outer pouch.

• 

  Peel the backing from the double-sided tape on the desiccant pack.

Place the pack directly on to the “Attach desiccant here” text on the interior camera shell.

To secure the camera, align the top shell security holes with the baseplate and place the top shell back into its original position. Tighten the security screws using the provided T10 Security Torx screwdriver.

Grounding

In order to attach the green-yellow grounding cable to the camera, perform the following:

Align a 20AWG or larger grounding cable with a ring terminal and drive an M4-0.7 x 6mm screw (not included) through the terminal and into the threaded grounding point on the back of the device as shown above.

Attach the other terminal of a grounding cable directly to a circuit breaker, ground rod or earth ground.

This unit is powered by PoE through a UL Listed ITE.

CM41-S Hub Mounting

• 

  Ensure the blue notches on the hub and the mount plate are aligned, and pull to remove the mount plate.

• 

  Use the mount plate to mark holes for mounting screws.

• 

  Drill 1/8 inch pilot holes. Drive the hub mounting screws through the mount plate directly into the the pilot holes.

• 

  Connect the RJ45 cable. Line up the blue notches on the mount plate and the hub and place the hub over the center pin on the mount plate.

CM41-S Lens Module Mounting

• 

  Place the camera module in the desired mounting position. Use the camera module mounting bracket to mark holes for mounting screws.

• 

  Drill 1/8 inch pilot holes. Drive the camera module mounting screws through the mounting bracket directly into the the pilot holes.

• 

  Adjust the camera module to the desired position and viewing angle.

• 

  For installs against a transparent window, ensure that the flat portion of the lens rubber is pressed firmly against the surface of the window.

Caution

• Maintenance and repair work must always be carried out by qualified technical personnel. Disconnect power from the unit when performing a maintenance task.
• Wiring methods used for the connection of the equipment to earth shall be in accordance with the National Electrical Code,ANSI/ NFPA 70, and the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1, CSA C22.1.
• The product must be installed and protected in a location that is not easily accessible, and is away from impacts or heavy vibration.
• The camera is only to be connected to PoE networks without routing to outside plants.
• If powered by a power adapter, the adapter should be properly grounded.
• Please contact certified dealers for power adapters.

There are two standards when making your own cat5 cable. These are commonly known as Type A or Type B. Please see image below to show the different wire configuration for both types.

Having two standards of compatible wiring will allow for 2 different variants of cable. These are known as Patch and Cross over.

A patch cable is used for connecting a network infrastructure device such as a switch, hub or router to a non network infrastructure device like an IP camera, computer or printer.

A cross over cable is used when connecting a non network infrastructure device to another non network infrastructure device such as an IP camera directly to a Laptop or a Laptop to Laptop or an infrastructure device to another such as a network switch to another network switch.

Patch cables must be made with both ends of the cable being made using the same type either both Type A or Type B. To successfully make a Cat5 cable you will require the following tools.

1 x Length of appropriate cable (Cat5, Cat5e or Cat6)

1 x RJ45 crimping tool

2 x RJ45 end plugs (RJ45 ends cannot be reused once they have been crimped, so a few spares may be advisable)

1 x RJ45 network cable tester (this is not essential but a VERY useful tool for fault finding should your cable not do what you expect)

To make your cable, simply decide which type of end you will be wiring (Type A or Type B). Arrange the colours of the cable according to the diagram above. Get the RJ45 plug so the clip on the plug is facing away from you. Insert the cables in the order you have arranged them (be careful with this), cat5 cable has a habit of mixing the colour cores up when inserting the cable into the plug. Once the cables are insert and the correct colour order has been verified, please use your RJ45 cable to crimp the RJ45 plug firmly to the end of the cable.

Once your RJ45 end is attached, simply move to the other end of the cable and repeat the process. Please make sure you use the same end type as your original connection. Failure to do so will result in making a cross over cable.

To make a cross over cable, please follow the instructions above but purposely make one end of the cable a Type A and the other a Type B.
